DD (8) is in primary 4 (Scotland) and we had parents' evening last night. We were told she is struggling with times tables and when writing sentences she often puts in words that don't make sense.

Can anyone recommend any books or online resources that might help?

For times tables, I'd recommend the online tool Times Tables Rockstars. It has been brilliant for my DD, and it's often recommended on MN. It is a paid-for application but is relatively inexpensive.

For the writing sentences issue, does she ever do that when she speaks? Do you mean she uses a slightly incorrect word, (eg 'pacific' instead of 'specific'), or that her sentences are generally quite jumbled and don't make sense? Ie is her vocabulary a bit weak, or is it more fundamental than that?

Or is it struggling to plan ahead what she is writing?
Could it be short term/working memory?

Did school suggest any websites like Sumdog or Mathletics? They are designed with fun to play games which reinforce tables and other aspects of maths. My kids all loved them at that stage.

I think it's her vocabulary that's a bit weak so isn't sure how to pad a sentence out to make it enjoyable to read. She'll maybe write : I went to the park but not think to expand on it

She also will have a story in her head that she wants to write but will only put part of it on paper and just assume the reader knows what she means therefore it doesn't make sense. So she'll think in her head that she met an alien and they went to a planet on a spaceship. She'll then only write down that she met an alien, with the next sentence being about them being on a planet with no information about their transport. That's just an example of something off the top of my head.

She already uses Sumdog but will look into Times Tables rockstars. Thanks for that.

Try asking in the Scotsnet topic as there may be more people there with direct experience of Curriculum for Excellence and resources to access.

Ds is now 18 and at Uni so I'm a bit out of the Primary loop Blush
