Does anyone know what this test is for? <concerned>

My dd came home today and told me she had to do a 'special test' today. The Headteacher told her she needed to do it.

Verbal fluency test where she had to name as many animals as poss in 1 minute.
Rhyming test with words
Using one word and putting into a sentence
Pointing at items in a picture described by the teacher.

She is in Year 4 at first school aged 9. Anyone have any ideas? Slightly concerned as a google search throws up worrying results.

I don’t know but I would just contact the school and ask them if you’re concerned. I can’t see what they could possibly have to hide so presumably they will just explain. Is it possible that everyone is doing it?

Jamhandprints · 14/03/2019 17:07

I'm not sure but is she very quiet in class?
Definitely ask the teacher, they'll be happy to explain.

Maybe the BPVS? here

Could be testing the whole class or a selected group before running a program? Some sort of intervention?

The BPVS is used to detect any speech, language and communication needs and will give your Dd a score. It’s a diagnostic tool.

But talk to the school.

Thanks. I will talk to the school. She used to be really quiet in class and was referred to speech and language, but over the last few years she has gained confidence.

I don't think it is the BPVS.

I will ask the school, but just wondered if it was a standard test thing that everyone knows about. She said only a few of the Year 4 have been asked to do it, and the teacher said something about helping to teach other children skills. No idea what this means.

How is her reading? That is a test of phonological awareness and comprehension skills.

Soontobe60 · 14/03/2019 19:56

Bearing in mind that she may be a bit muddled about the types of questions, this sounds like it could be a dyslexia screening test.

Marzipanface · 14/03/2019 21:35

Her reading is good. She scored very high on her last comprehension and reading test, according to her teacher. 11yrs and six months which is the top for the particular testing they use. She’s definitely not dyslexic. I’m perplexed as to why she had to do it.

You can have excellent reading and have a processing disorder ( would have previously been called dyslexia). My DD at year 4 had a reading age of 12 years old, but a visual processing speed of 76 ( average is 100).

My son reads well, has great comprehension and he is professionally diagnosed as dyslexic. There is a lot more to dyslexia than reading and comprehension.
