Best things to do with DS to prepare him for reception?

I am really not sure what will will be expected of DS1 (4 in august) when he starts reception in September. We are moving to England from Scotland in 2 weeks so he is now starting school a year earlier that he would have been. He has attended a year of pre-school here and is quite a chatty, confident boy so I think he will be okay socially but I am not sure what he will be expected to be able to do with regards to literacy, numeracy etc. I am also concerned about the fact that he has to wear a proper shirt with little buttons and he can't do them up by himself.

Any hints/tips on helping him prepare or ideas of expectations?

Thanks.

i was told somewhere that is it good to play games with them (snakes and ladders etc ) and GASP let them lose!!!

i am not entirely sure why but i guess it is so they know that the world does not always revolve around them and maybe some things will be a bit tricky?!

Getting dressed/undressed himself, cutlery skills, bottom wiping... practical things like that and which I'm sure everyone else has said.

Writing his name (if it's an easy one!) This is the only "academic" thing I taught DSs as I thought it would be a nice confidence boosting thing to be able to do. They weren't summer babies though, they were Feb/March which may make a difference.

LOL at "letting" them lose at Snakes and Ladders. DD1 always lands on big snakes and gets very, very cross.

The first time we played it with her, she announced that she wasn't going to play it again until her next birthday, because when she was five, she would land on all the ladders
