Got ds's school report and so so impressed with him. I changed him school toward the end of year 1 and at his last school they were querying his ability to keep up as he is a real daydreamer although very bright. HIs teacher has done wonders with him and his report has made me shed a tear of proudness. Every single subject he has done well in and appears to enjoy and show real interest in. They say that he works slowly but methodically but dont seem to see that as an issue as he really tries to get all the work done. She said he was a pleasure to teach I am so proud of him. He has worked so very hard.

He also had his year 2 SAT results:

English (speaking and listening) = 3
English (reading) = 3
English (writing) = 2b
Mathematics = 3
Science = 3

Really want to reward him as last year we rewarded a year of hard work with bike (also worked well as his birthday is winter time so nice for him have something in summer). Not sure what reward to get or wether to give him some money towards his car fund (he is saving all xmas money etc for a real car!

Was also surpsied at the difference in grading between the girls and boys.

well done
I'm waiting on ds's year 6 results

hippipotami · 07/07/2007 19:49

Wow, that is FANTASTIC!! He has done better than my ds in Y3.

You should be very very proud!

MamaMaiasaura · 07/07/2007 21:47

I am Ds doesnt know about the SATS although he said to me the other day that when the teacher gives you work to do on your own he thinks they test him. Didnt seem upset or stressed out by it. I said it is just so they can work out where you could do with any extra help.

I think the SATS change from year to year dont they? So this are year 2 sats (key stage 2) or do the 3's mean he is meeting key stage 3. Is very confusing and tbh I dont really understand the purpose of them. Glad it is also teacher assessed tho cos children can vary day to day.

They are great results Awen - well done to him. The levels (2a, 2b, 2c, 3) don't relate directly to the year numbers or key stage numbers confusingly. 2b is what is expected at the end of KS1 (yr 2) and 3 is the highest you can get then, so his results are ace! At the end of KS2 (yr 6) a level 4b is average attainment I think.

I was interested you mentioned a difference in the grading of boys & girls - can you elaborate?

roisin · 08/07/2007 12:22

Well done - great results.

For inf. the standards are as follows:
KS1 finishes at the end of yr2. The 'standard' to attain is Level 2. (i.e. the govt target for most children to have achieved.)

KS2 finishes at the end of yr6.
Standard to attain is Level 4.

KS3 finishes at the end of yr9.
Standard to attain is Level 5.

lilolilmanchester · 08/07/2007 12:32

hi Roisin. What level would you expect your brighter yr 9s to be achieving? My DS had level 5s in all subjects in Yr 6 (not boasting, just stating fact, and he's a reluctant scholar, so just want to be ensuring he's making appropriate progress) so interested to know what YOU (rather than national requirements) would expect at Yr 9.

roisin · 08/07/2007 12:43

Sorry - very wishy washy answer.

Yr9 SATs are not terribly reliable, and not particularly valued as an indicator of very much.

Level 5 is the highest they can get at primary, but covers a multitude of abilities; depending on how much coaching they had at primary.

However, a solid Level 5 at KS2 should get them at least a Level 6 at KS3; and as long as the papers are good, the brighter ones should be achieving a Level 7.

In Maths and Science it is possible to get a Level 8 at KS3, but it needs a combination of factors to do so.

KS3 Level 5s should get Cs at GCSE minimum.
Level 7s and 8s should be at least aiming for A*s.

roisin · 08/07/2007 12:45

HTH
Is he yr9 now btw? What results has he got in Maths/Science?
Was it him who had the problem with the Shakespeare paper? English results don't come out til August, so can't be used for setting anyway; so it won't affect anything very much if he has been marked down.

lilolilmanchester · 08/07/2007 12:48

yes, Yr 9 now. No, not the one who had problem with Shakespeare paper (but you were very helpful a while back when I was concerned about his lack of work and always being in trouble with teachers for it).

Not got Science marks yet. L8 for maths (he tells me but not seen it in writing). But then maths is one of those subjects that's "easy if you're good at it", isn't it? ie not much revision necessary IF you've got your head around it. English results in Aug will be more interesting!

lilolilmanchester · 08/07/2007 12:52

thanks for the explanation, by the way, yes it does help. It's one thing knowing what national expectations are, another having it translated by a teacher! Thanks

roisin · 08/07/2007 12:54

L8 is fantastic - it's the highest they can get, and is pretty unusual.

Well done him

theStallionOfSensibleness · 08/07/2007 12:57

ds2 in year one
took sats to see hwat he coudl get
got a 3

lilolilmanchester · 08/07/2007 13:01

SoS - that's awesome!
Roisin - thanks again. He is in top set at a selective grammar, and I think most of his set got L8.I was just wondering cos a colleague's DD is apparently L8 for everything, but only in Yr 7, so wondered if I had misunderstood! She's obviously G&T.

roisin · 08/07/2007 13:28

sounds unlikely to me Lilolilmanchester!
I don't know of any test that tests English up to a Level 8
And I think Optional SATs at yr7/8 in Maths/Science only go up to Level 7.

Your school sounds fab btw. I'm so pleased he's doing well despite everything. I wish we had selective grammars round here.

lilolilmanchester · 08/07/2007 14:09

agree, it sounded unlikely when he told me that, but he's insistent that this is what they've been told (comprehensive in neighbouring authority).
DS's school is fab, and although they have high academic standards, great for sport/drama etc too. Downside is that they have extremely high expectations, and I think, as I posted once before, my DS's behaviour probably wouldn't give cause for concern in a compbut teachers constantly on his back at this school. I guess he'll benefit in the end and good to know he's doing ok in spite of all the complaints about him!

(Awen, sorry for hijacking your thread)

dayofftomorrow · 08/07/2007 19:44

there is the teachers assessment in year 9 which goes up to level 8/ep in english, level 8 /ep in science and ep in maths, they have to do projects and extra work by easter to attain these

ep means exceptional performance

MamaMaiasaura · 08/07/2007 22:29

thanks.

Snorkle - the gender differences for his school were (based on my ds's grades):

Speaking & listening Level 3 - boys 12% girls 30%

Reading Level 3 - boys 15% girls 40%

writing Level 2b - Boys 27% girls 23%. However Level 3 - Boys 3% girls 28%

Maths Level 3 - boys 33% girls 30%

Science - boys 36% girls 64%

OP posts:
snorkle · 08/07/2007 22:51

That's interesting Awen, our school never shared that sort of info. I guess if it's not a huge year group the figures could easily be skewed by just a few brighter (or older) girls.

dayofftomorrow · 09/07/2007 08:57

The writing bit also includes stuff like handwriting and letter formation and if there are signs of joining up so a child could produce a wonderful piece with lovely descriptions but lose marks if it doesn't look so good

MamaMaiasaura · 09/07/2007 09:21

My ds is apprantly fuill of god ideas with writing, does good sized, joined up writing but he finds it hard to get started sometimes. Basically he enjoys chatting about the ideas but gets bored writing it down . Bless. His teacher said to me is not anything to worry ab out as he is dipping into 3 and will be something that comes with maturity. I dont want to hot house him and tbh he already does enough homework in my eyes & his teacher agrees.

Having said all that am considering a tutor for year 4 as would love to get him into a grammer school. He has the ability i think to do well there.

Awen - well done to your ds. I'm feeling very proud too as my ds2 just got level 3 in all his yr 2 sats!
