What does your school do in Homework club?

My DS has some SEN and homework (maths online, and spellings) has been a battle.
We are just about holding our own with reading so the school suggested he go to homework club for the rest of it.

We also have a Talk homework and another "what we're doing this week" homework (e.g. spot the shapes, find the country we are doing this term on a map) which we do when we remember.
I've just checked his maths online and there's nothing done since Nov (yes I should have checked earlier!) and he's done no spelling practice (they don't have tests - he's in Y2).
I'm going to ask how it's going, but if your school has a homework club, what do they do at it?
My DD is in YR and is struggling with a few things (TBF I think she's "in the bottom third of the class" rather than "really struggling") and the YR teacher has also suggested homework club for her, in her case not because we battle to do it but because she needs a bit of extra practice.

I tutor children privately. I also run a homework club. I make up homework packets for the kids on my lunch break using my laptop.
Variety is crucial to homework. All of their homework tasks are age appropriate and simulating as well. My advice is to mix things up as much as possible.
Does the school have a homework club or not? During the homework sessions I occasionally show them a video or ask them to write a short review of something in their own words.
Another popular homework task is to have the children teach each other or create a book report. I give them a month to work on their homework. I’m a goal oriented person. Homework must serve a purpose.

Yes, as I've said, the school has a homework club and DS goes to it. They are suggesting DD go as well.

The homework to be completed is the school's maths/spelling homework for DS and they are suggesting either the same, or additional practice on maths/spelling/writing for DD.

Hopefully it’ll help.

He's not at all at the level where he could explain to me what he's supposed to be doing/what he did, or self-organise to do it, though.

Not quite sure what you are asking?
My Yr 3 (autistic, struggles to do homework at home because home is home and not for school work) goes to homework club. It’s run by the TAs. He does his weekly maths and his spellings. They check it and help him if he needs it. Then he gets squash and a biscuit:-) If he finishes his homework quickly he gets to do Mathletics on the computer.
He loves it. Has transformed my life too - no more battles over homework :-)

That is really what I'm asking - what do they actually do?
Because I can't SEE anything DS has done at homework club. If it's supposed to be his actual maths homework - I should ask.

At our school, homework club is run by the teachers, different teachers are on rota every week, and for each year group during lunch hour.

They gives support to the children who struggle at home, or give them opportunity to access computer if they don't have it at home.

If your ds has been attending homework club and not doing anything, you need to ask the teacher or ta in charge and ask them to look out for him.

spinabifidamom · 11/02/2019 14:19

Really?

Can you ask someone at the school if you could be kept in the loop with homework? Is there a homework diary or not? I send every child home with a homework book detailing what homework is set on homework day.
Additionally I send all the parents a email to tell them about the homework. Parents are supposed to check the homework diaries and leave a note for me. That way I will know if homework is a problem or not.

I know what it's supposed to be - weekly online maths, spellings, and a talk homework that we usually manage.
He just doesn't seem to be doing it!
He needs way way more than just "looking out for" though.

Seems to be a technical issue. The online maths never registers that he's done it but he's been doing OK.

Oh, that's a good news. Smile

Yes it is, especially as it means he's actually doing his Maths homework which he wasn't before.
