Understanding the world?

Good evening,

My son is in reception and has just received his spring term report. He is on target for everything apart from 'Understanding the world - The world' which is emerging.

Please can I have some tips on how to improve this? What activities can I do with him at home? Places to take him etc? Smile

That is just talking about everything you see and do.
You can take him into your kitchen, and let him help you cook, or into the garden and talk about the fact the daffodils are out because Spring is coming, and naming the season, and then when it snows, about snow melting and turning into water. It's about looking at a cobweb, or a snail on the ground or some frogspawn in a pond. It's about talking about something you see on the TV, or when you are walking to school.
You don't have to go anywhere special.
When you shop, and go round the supermarket with him, normal conversation about the fruit and then maybe finding out where it comes from - that some fruit needs to grow in hot countries. that veg grows underground in some cases. That things like chips are actually made from potatoes - as indeed, are crisps.
The fact that things change when you cook with them - think about eggs - how boiling them for longer makes them harder, but when you put them in a cake mix, although you know they are there, you can't 'see' them, as they mix with other things. The fact that you freeze water to make ice cubes then they melt when you take them out the freezer but eggs don't turn back into raw eggs when they cool after cooking - how odd is that ?
etc
etc
etc

Yes, I totally agree with BackforGood. I think simple thing that you can do to improve is just talk about everything!

Talk about everything.
With my five year old DD I take her on nature walks and point out things to her. When my eldest daughter was a baby I pushed her around in her pram and talked with her. It’s all about the natural world really. Last year I took all the kids to the beach. We collected seashells and I explained why we needed beaches.
Science at his age needs to be about having a interesting discussion rather than boring worksheets. And experiences.

Firstly I really wouldn't worry. They can only mark on what they say and they may just have not happened to hear/see him talk about his understanding of the world. Other than that just chat chat chat. About work, the shops, the house etc.
