Hello everyone
I will be moving to UK, London this june.
Can anyone please guide which school year my kids will join?

My daughter is 7 years old, her birthday is 25 september 2011 and son 5 years old born on 2nd November 2013

Also I am thinking to prepare them a little on uk syllabus so they get used to it. Can you tell me anything about the books/publishers for their age groups?

Thank you.

I believe your daughter would be going into Year 3 and your son into Year 1.

I think that your daughter would go into year 2 in June, but year 3 for the new academic year in September. Your son would be in reception in June, and year 1 in September.

Where are you moving from, OP? Do they speak and read (sort of) English already?

Currently year 2 and reception equivalent. When you arrive in June you need to apply for In Year places but these many not appear in time for a start before the academic summer terms ends ( roughly 3rd week July) .

The curriculums are online so you can see if there's any specific gaps

You should be able to get UK curriculum books on Amazon

Your DD would currently be in Y2 and your son would currently be in reception. So if you return in June they'll finish up in those years then move up in September.

In terms of the syllabus your son won't have missed much apart from basic phonics (look up jolly phonics and maybe try some reading books - they aim for level 3 by the end of the year) and very basic numbers (up to 10 and preferably up to 20). He should have some basic idea about writing (e.g. how to hold a pencil and some attempt at writing words and sentences. Nothing is expected in YR in terms of spelling and punctuation. They aim is just to get them writing.

You can look up the syllabus for your daughter she would be finishing KS1 as she arrives in June - the syllabus is available online. You can look up past SATS KS1 papers as an example of the kind of work she'd be expected to be doing.

Another thing worth bearing in mind is that infant class size restrictions apply until year 2. If your eldest is not admitted before the summer due to the year being full, there may be capacity to do so in September.

Thank you all so much

We are moving from India.
They do speak English and my daughter can write and read as well.

Best of luck in your moving plans. x

My DD had a girl join her class in year 2 from Mumbai. Academically she was way ahead of the class, but she had not had as much experience of the creative side.

In London it can be difficult to find schools with spaces - many of the most popular ones are full and will only have a space in the years above Reception if someone has left. Reception entry is complicated but for state schools this is usually done either on the basis of distance (closest addresses get priority, or “catchment area” addresses get priority) or religion (for church schools - church attenders get priority). For private it can either be first registered gets priority or they can be assessed.

What this all means is that you may want to look into schools in a few areas and check places are available for your two before you choose exactly where to live.

Apologies if you know all this already!
