At what stage is a child usually reading purple books? I know they're all different but just wondering what is expected?

My son is on purple now. He was 5 a week ago and is in reception.

He’s the furthest on in his year tho so I think it’s more commonly achieved in year 1.

My daughter achieved purple over the summer holidays before year 1 and got put onto gold (the next level) on the first day of year 1

Purple is an extension of the green level - very common for reception.

Onatreebyariver, I think you might be thinking of Oxford Reading tree book bands. I think that Write Inc is a different scheme.

Purple is the third level of Write Inc, but I do not know how it corresponds to ORT.

My 6 year old in Yr1 is progressing through RWI. I find the link quite useful to see how it correlates to ORT and what is expected for age.

@user1483387861 thank you, I'm probably being dense but on that link on the green and the purple RWI books it says foundation stage : 5 at the top and year 1 :5 at the bottom, so not sure if those books are suitable for reception or year 1? I just wondered if there was an average such as red ditty books for reception up til Christmas, green books in reception up until Easter, purple for the last term,

But I guess it must vary from school to school?

Ah yes sorry I was thinking of book bands. My child who is on purple book band is off the RWI scheme now.

dingledangles · 28/01/2019 20:40

@Onatreebyariver that's exceptional! He must be a super reader to have graduated read write inc already :-)

So I'm assuming purple books are about normal for reception at this point in the year?

Not year 1?

(Sorry purple read write inc books)

TA that does phonics interventions using read write Inc here.

Purple RWI is fairly good for this point of year R but not exceptionally far ahead, its blue ORT level, so 5-6 year olds - they'd be one of my smarter ones.

He must be a super reader to have graduated read write inc already :-) Most schools use ORT books alongside RWI but yes, purple ORT would be very high for Reception (its about year 2 level) Being off read write inc is pretty much unheard of in reception though as it's an entire literacy scheme, not just reading books, so forms the phonics lessons.

dingledangles · 29/01/2019 07:33

@SadOtter thinking about it we were told in a meeting by my child's school that most children are on RWI until year 2 and some are still in year 2! But maybe some schools do it differently? When children at this school come off of RWI they are free readers and do comprehensions!

My child is year 1 on these books so must be fairly behind 🙄 my friends child is in reception and not 5 until May but on these books.... so I was trying to work out which is the norm, whether he's really far ahead or she's really far behind 🙈

SadOtter · 29/01/2019 20:17

It's not particularly behind for year 1, purple is when the stories start to get a little more complex, so it starts being more about comprehension and fluency, self-checking and recognising the high frequency words rather than simply decoding, so children tend to spend ages at this level.

I really wouldn't worry too much about who is on what reading level, there is a lot more to phonics than that. My DD whizzed through the reading levels, she was a free reader by Easter of reception, however she has somehow managed to master reading without really learning why those letters make that word or why she pauses where she does, so if you ask her to try and sound out how a word might be spelled she just looks at you blankly and her approach to punctuation is to throw it at a sentence and see where it lands.

dingledangles · 30/01/2019 15:46

@SadOtter I like her approach to punctuation! Bless her!! Thank you, you have reassured me!!

I'm a year one teacher and we use RWI in my school. I personally hate it as it's so prescriptive and boring. Sorry, that's not what you were asking! We have plenty of children in year 1 on purple so I wouldn't worry. I teach in a very deprived area though and children start school pretty low (mostly due to parents not interacting with them at home sadly). I would say that children in reception that are doing very well might be on purple. Year one children currently on purple may take longer to pick things up but I wouldn't be unduly concerned.

dingledangles · 30/01/2019 20:41

@Yourownpersonaljesus oh good, thank you so much for the reassurance!
