WOW I just think that is really fab. You do realise that everyone who is on a commitee are now going to want to know exactly what stalls you had, so that they can copy you.

notasheep · 29/06/2007 23:44

Crikey-i am going to be busy
Just one change made a huge difference-we had it straight after school instead of on a Saturday morning, people cant be arsed to come then but they have to collect their children from school and we have nabbed them!!

gold start to whoever had that bright idea about the timing! well done notasheep, that's a brilliant result. [griin]

portonovo · 01/07/2007 14:38

That's really interesting you should say that about the timing. We've found our school fetes etc do WORSE if they are straight after school. People just seem to want to go home, they don't want to hang around for ages and spend lots! And it means not so many dads are around to help out or bring the kids or just spend.

The other factor is that if it's straight after school we can't use either of the two school halls, because they are both used for assemblies and other things. If we could guarantee perfect weather that wouldn't matter, because we'd just use the school field and playgrounds, but life's not like that is it. So we need a good couple of hours with no children around to set up the event.

Saturday mornings have been OK, but for us the breakthrough was to start having them on Friday evenings, about 5-7. This is right over most people's teatime, so we sell more hot food. And it finishes early enough so people can get little ones home to bed if they need to. It also means that a lot of our staff (and they are very supportive) will stay and man a stall or whatever - for them it means just staying a few hours after school rather than coming back another time.

I bet you're really glad it's all over now. We had our summer fete a fortnight ago and it went really well. We took about £1400 and I think the pure profit was about £1200 so we were pleased.

Hope you get better weather for your BBQ!

notasheep · 01/07/2007 14:49

To say I am glad its all over would be an understatement-however i now have 2 weeks stress to organise the BBQ-we even have a bouncey castle then-if this rain continues i will have alot of meat in my freezer!

Wow, that sounds great notasheep. We are starting to organise our first ever fair and would be grateful for any tips. We were going to do a saturday mid-day. Do you not think that's a good time?

What stalls did you have? What kind of refreshments, entertainment???

notasheep · 01/07/2007 16:46

The timing is a big issue-dds school had always had christmas and spring fair on a Saturday at 11am and very few people came.

This was the first time ever that it was held after school!
Stalls: Bottle,Cakes,toys,Books.

Tombola,Sweet jars.
Face Painting,Craft activity.
Bean bag throw,Penalty shoot out.

Refreshments:Hot Dogs,Scones,Iced buns,Tea,coffee,juice,water.

You need to do lots of networking to obtain as much for nothing then everything is clear profit.
One of the parents has a cafe in town so all the rolls for hotdogs, scones and buns were donated.
We use a cash and carry for stuff then can sell stuff at a profit.
Any items left over are then car booted and we have raised £205 doing 3 car boots!
I think i might be asked to stay as chairperson for another year

my dd's is always after school when she first started it felt a bit wired but we are used to it now and like you say parents are there collecting little ones.....

well done that is fab ammount for the school

plowder · 01/07/2007 19:12

Notasheep poor you, the 18 months I was PTFA chair were very stressful, you couldn't of paid me to stay on. We did well with fundraising, during my school year (1 sep '05 - 31 aug '06) we raised 8 grand for a wooden play area. We have a rule in our constitution that anyone one can only be chair for 18months in any one timespan, luckily ds is year 4 at the moment

plowder · 01/07/2007 19:14

We are school of 90.

notasheep · 01/07/2007 19:55

Apparently nobody at dds school has done chairperson for more than a year.
Isnt the stress so unbelievable and soooo much is expected of you, however i have enjoyed it.
8 grand very impressive, well done you
