What do schools report to each other when child transfers?

I'm hoping to relocate to a new town for September, and because of the endless mess of trying to sell up, we won't have a state school place guaranteed. I'm enrolling DD at an independent school for year one entry. I'm assuming her current school will send a report on her reception year, am I right? I haven't had the 'end of year' parent-teacher meeting yet.

When we moved when my DD was the same age as yours, her original teacher gave us a copy of her report and some of her work to give to her new teacher. As far as I'm aware there was no direct communication between them.

From www.teachernet.gov.uk/management/atoz/p/pupilrecords/
"Transferring a pupil's educational record when s/he moves to a new school.
When a pupil ceases to be registered at one school and becomes registered at another (either maintained or independent) in England, the governing body of the old school is responsible for transferring their educational record to the new school. This must be done no later than 15 school days after the day when the pupil ceases to be registered at the old school.

From 3 October 2005, schools must also transfer pupil records to schools which pupils transfer (either maintained or independent) in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The record must be sent to the governing body of the new school or, if the school is an independent one, the head teacher."

Don't assume the new teacher will read them though ! ds' Yr3 one hadn't despite our efforts to send on his reports etc (transferred internationally).

When a child moves to a different school, we (the teachers) are asked to check that all their records are in order and they ALL get sent on. This includes all end of year reports, all formal test results (SATS, Baseline assessments etc), plus any school assessments on core subject assessments. Also included are any records relating to special needs should there be any, including any correspondence from health professionals.

Also, many schools will send on records of achievement which include pieces of work done by the pupil. Some schools send on all the child's exercise books too.

Thank you, that's very helpful. As she's only in reception, I imagine it'll be the report book they're filling in throughout the year. I'll make sure I tell them we're going at the P and T meeting so the teacher gets some notice.
