Next week we have a long awaited (over a year) appt with Ed Psych at school. DS (almost 9) has dyspraxia and is 3 years behind with English and 2 with Maths despite schools best efforts and ours at home.

I am keen to ask about dyslexia testing (spelling OK but other things rings bells) maybe processing speed. Anything else useful to ask for?

This is a preliminary visit so she knows what tests to run/avenues to explore in January. Just want to use her expertise to the full since getting to see her has been an ongoing mission at every SEN meeting and playground encounter with SENCO!

Thanks

I think I would just make sure you list all your concerns. So if you're in any doubt ask and she can perform the test. I think usually as standard she'll do a processing speed check but you can ask to make sure.

From my work knowledge of years ago, Ed Psychs are former teachers. They are excellent at working with class teachers so your child can access learning. A diagnosis is all very well, but you need something to change so that better progress is made. A classroom observation would be great to advise the class teacher and any other ongoing strategies for the teacher and you would also be helpful. Hope it goes well.

You're lucky. We have a bookable Ed Psych service where the teacher has to book a 50 minute slot with an EP at a local Children's centre, then turn up with the parent, but NOT the child, and discuss problems-advice will then be given!
