There are lots of good schools in Lewisham - which ones have you been told have spaces?

Hello SE13Mummy, So sorry for the late reply. I hope you had a good Christmas.
Well I have been offered a place at Edmund Waller primary school don't know if to accept the offer or decline. My only concern is that their results are just ok.

Edmund Waller has expanded in the past few years as well as federating with another school. I've got a number of friends with teens and twenty somethings whose DC went there and were very happy with it. Why don't you ask to visit in January, or post on one of the local Facebook groups to get the opinions of current parents? Mummy's Gin Fund and the SE4 groups are both active and often useful. Having said that, I wouldn't worry about results! Look at the website and read recent newsletters to get an idea of what's on offer and what the current issues are.

Sounds like you're local to me.You can ask on I Love SE4 and Telegraph Hill Noticeboard on FB to get current parents' opinions, but as an outsider I see lots of very engaged parents and children (including friends with older DC there) and a very good music department - they put on an annual youth orchestra concert at a very high standard.

And a really nice, large playground, come to think of it! Went to their summer fair last year and was pleasantly surprised.

I went to their Christmas fair and was so impressed and also spoke to the head teacher Ms Boxall very lovely lady. Some of the parents had mixed feelings about the school , while many said their kids were happy, others complained that they were taking their kids out of the school to habadasher only because the were not doing well academically... Now that's what am worried about. I want a well rounded school also I really like EW and hope am making the right decision .

My perception (again, I'm not a parent there, just from what filters down from friends) is that it's a very liberal school, no uniform, no/little homework, very dismissive of SATS, but historically the community school for Telegraph Hill - which includes some very wealthy families. Since then a) the school has expanded, b) the very reputable Haberdashers group has opened a Free School up the hill. I would expect both of these to have/have had a detrimental impact, but I'm not sure. And other friends with children there are very positive about it.

How old are your kids? Edmund waller is a VERY popular school locally. I’ve loterally only ever met parents who gush about it or lament that their kids didn’t get in. Admittedly I’ve heard rumour that parents higher up the school are less gushing than lower down - but crucially I’ve never heard anything negative directly from anyone whose kids are actually there. I’ve been to open days, Christmas fairs etc and it seems lovely if v middle class / hippy.

We are just out of catchment and our kids are at the other haberdashers (not the one on telegraph hill, though people are also be enthusiastic about that school) and we are happy. The other schools with good reputations new lewisham way are ashmead which is supposed to be lovely but v oversubscribed, and myatt garden which is very popular.

Honestly though, i know people who gave up on moving to this area when it looked like their kids wouldn’t get into Edmund waller - it really is a very loved and well regarded school

My kids are 7/8 years. I hope am making the right decision. My partner doesn't like the school because of the no uniform and little home work but I don't mind.
My kids go to a catholic school and always have loads of homework . My DD is very bright but of recent the school have made lots of changes and lots of parent took their kids out of the school.

Edmund Waller is an excellent excellent School. My ds is at a school very close by (out of catchment for EW) and we have many friends there. I adore the head and the teaching staff. Some parents are very privileged and affluent but the school has a very mixed demographic. I do not know of any children who does not enjoy their time there. I know the other surrounding schools as well as Edmund Waller very well so feel free to dm me if you like some insight/feedback. We are at a neighbouring school with a different ethos, ie huge focus on behaviour, uniform and home learning. We are very happy there too so if you want feedback just give me a shoutSmile
