DS is 5 in Reception and attends an independent school. He has been reading very well so I was thinking to buy him his first chapter book. I would be delighted to receive any recommendations.

If you look for the Early Reader banded stuff - blue band's the easiest level on those. Can usually pick them up good second hand in good condition off Amazon for basically the postage cost only.

Have a look at Project X, some excellent books at all levels including chapter books.

Some although not all Roald Dahl books might also be an idea. The Enormous Crocodile or James and The Giant Peach.

Something shorter like Roald Dahl's The Magic Finger might be an easier introduction. Or let him loose in your local library.

Dirty Bertie series if he likes silly humour. Very quick and easy to read
Dragon master series, again simple language easy to read. Good if he likes fantasy/adventure.
Shorter Roald Dahl - fantastic mr fox, twits, magic finger
Holly Webb getting longer but still simple language and easy to read. Good for cute animal stories.

Flat Stanley - It's funny, and just right for a first chapter book IMO (slightly larger text, pages with illustrations, not too long and daunting).

My Naughty Little Sister is great as an early chapter book. Or The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark.

Just to add my DC's first ever chapter style book (I can't remember if it actually has chapters or not) was the rabbit and bear. There are three in the collection it's funny and sweet and perfect for a child just about ready for chapter books.

Thank you very much for the superb recommendations! They all sound brilliant and I am looking forward to discovering them with DS.

I’d tried a few things that are more typical but the first chapter books that gripped my 6-years old are the old Enid Blyton famous five books. Currently reading the 12th ...
He also much enjoyed the 13/26/39 etc storey tree house series. Incredibly silly though!

I'd like to second the suggestions of dragon masters and rabbit and bear really great first chapter books. Also although not chapter books I've found the Usbourne see inside books really good for readers getting to the level of being ready for chapter books.
