you will probably get to sit on a teeny chair with your knees behind your ears. If you're very good at networking you can collar the other new parents and drag them to the pub after.

or, I suppose, drag the head to the pub if you are really ambitious.

We got wine for state school. And nuts. Clearly a superior sort of school!

We just all sat and were introduced to various people (head, teachers etc), given a few presentations about the school day etc, and most importantly given a folder telling us what class, what teacher, and starting arrangements. Was fine.

Beware of pushy women - it's the rep from the PTA...

The answer is NO

Can be an interesting evening out doing a bit of parent watching.

Oh, enjoy, I went to our one last week. It is a state school, but they did give us wine!

They gave us a letter detailing what class dd was in (3 class intake), and then I got to meet and chat to her teacher and ta. Lovely because dd has same classroom and ta as ds had 4 years ago

Then chatted to other parents - some I know as ds has been at the school, and some new ones, nice to meet new people.

Then the head, a teacher and the cook all gave a presentation (after a talk by current Y2 children)
They showed us the uniform. (new one, joggers for reception for the first term

Then we got to see the actual classroom our dc would be in. (lovely trip down memory lane for me, sigh, I do love ladybird class)

And then I went home.

Enjoy it, drink some wine, chat to the other parents, but most importantly DO NOT SNOG THE HEAD!!
(well, unless he is a dish)

Ours is a small school and you get wine! I was so nervous with ds1 that one glass of wine made me feel rather merry. You'll meet some other parents and they'll probably talk about what the first few days will be like .... not wanting to leave mummy & daddy God I can't remember what else and I've been to two of them!! Had a huge envelope full of forms, ordering uniform, headlice info (always my fave).
I wouldn't snog the head of our school ... she's not that attractive.

CountessDracula · 21/06/2007 23:36

oh it was fab

the wine was crap but have such a bad cold that I couldn't taste it anyway

lovely
4 kids did various musical recitals
then two of them did walking in the air piano and singing

DD has the teacher I really wanted!!!
and all her mates in her class

other parents lovely, the vibe was great, i feel v happy in our choice

Went to ours last night, and got wine, AND biscuits and fresh bread made by the terrifying dinner lady (she gave a speech in which she said her dinners were all fresh and MUCH nicer than Jamie Oliver's and invited us all, with no trace of double entendre, to come and rifle through her larders anytime!). This is our local state primary and it was wonderful. Really great vibe, excellent headteacher, and so pleased we got a place there for DD.

hippipotami · 22/06/2007 14:39

Our dinner lady was fab as well, really nice homely type, a mum herself, and she cooks all the meals from scratch.

Bit curious though, because the schoom menu is issued by the borough council and is the same for all schools in the area. Does that mean each school has a cook who has to cook homemade meals as per the council issued menu?
