What happened to wet play?

Stephthegreat · 19/11/2018 23:24

I remember a lot of wet playtimes at school. It was chucking it down outside so we stayed in our classroom at break time and lunch.

DS is on his third chest infection (yes he’s prone) but even when it’s bucketing down the children have to play outside.Hes come home with jumper and pants still damp.

Don’t schools have wet play anymore?ds school just say it’s good for the children to go outside

We have wet play.

MakeLemonade · 19/11/2018 23:29

We have wet play too.

ShowOfHands · 19/11/2018 23:29

We have wet play here.

Enidblyton1 · 19/11/2018 23:38

Unless it’s torrential rain or thunder, children at our school are always outside.
Every child has a pair of waterproof dungarees and waterproof jacket, which keeps them dry. I wouldn’t be happy with them playing outside in all weathers without decent clothing.

RedSkyLastNight · 20/11/2018 07:57

Wet play exists but it has to be very wet. Light drizzle wouldn't count.

funmummy48 · 20/11/2018 08:06

Ours get sent out in the rain unless it's torrential. It does cause problems as quite a few children are under equipped and arrive at school without a coat of wellies even when it's already raining. Many parents drop their children off by car and seem to forget that the children will need a cost for the day. Then there are the parents that day "I told him/her to bring one but they refused" 😐 I'm not inferring that you're negligent in the coat department op by the way! It doesn't sit well with me to see children cold, wet and unhappy with hacking coughs.

Kazzyhoward · 20/11/2018 08:09

Hes come home with jumper and pants still damp.

Did he not have a coat?

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2018 08:11

Decent coat and maybe send waterproof trousers and even wellies if it worries you.

BringOnTheScience · 20/11/2018 08:12

He needs a coat.

Children are a nightmare for the rest of the day if they've been cooped up inside for wet play. Teachers can't easily set up for the next lesson. Get 'em outside!

Stephthegreat · 20/11/2018 08:14

Yes I agree.Ds has coat, scarf and gloves but really little protection when it’s bucketing down outside and yet the school wonder why all the children have bad coughs and colds (caused by infection or virus initially but really not helped by sitting in wet clothes all day).

School have never mentioned waterproof clothing to me.They did get given some umbrellas once when it was really bad.

It seems a weekend at home and DS picks up being kept warm and dry then back to school the chest gets worse.

I'm guessing they dont have enough staff to supervise kids in individual classrooms or something like that

Stephthegreat · 20/11/2018 08:16

He’s got a very good coat and hood but can’t zip it up instead. He ends going out with it unfastened.

We have wet play too. They don't send them in for drizzle but if it's properly raining then they go in.

Childrenofthesun · 20/11/2018 08:19

We still have indoor wet play at the school I work at and at my DC's school. Talk to the school and ask if they either get the kids to being in waterproof trousers and wellies or keep them indoors. There would be loads at my school who wouldn't have waterproofs though.

SnuggyBuggy · 20/11/2018 08:20

I wouldn't expect to need waterproof trousers or wellies during the day to be fair

Stephthegreat · 20/11/2018 08:25

Yes I can’t see the school going going for waterproof trousers. His coat is waterproof and the children have wellies at school but only for trips to the farm or muddy walks.

I seem to have good memories of wet play as a child, nice and warm in a classroom doing colouring and playing cards with friends.I find it strange that this isn’t an option.Perhaps they’ve cut back on dinner ladies or staff?

I'd start by teaching him to zip up his coat himself. My 3 year old can do it.

We're working on one life skill at a time ready for school. Currently it's getting his coat ready to put on, by turning the sleeves right from inside out.

redsummershoes · 20/11/2018 08:36

dc's school is the same. out they go no matter the weather.
sensible clothes and shoes is the answer.(and for schools to have a sensible shit weather suitable uniform)

redsummershoes · 20/11/2018 08:39

if your dc shouldn't go out in rain for medical reasons then you need to talk to teachers.
however running about and being out in daylight is important for lung and eye development. not to mention the exercise.

BrokenWing · 20/11/2018 08:43

If his coat covers his bum and is properly waterproof going outside for a little bit in light-moderate rain is preferable to being indoors all day.

He needs to learn to zip up his coat pronto.

user789653241 · 20/11/2018 08:55

Our school has wet play when heavily raining.
My ds keeps thin very long waterproof coat in his bag all the time just for playing outside when raining.
We also have agreement with school that he can stay inside in the office if he is under the weather or need to be tip top condition for hospital apps. But didn't needed that option for last few years.
Taking immune boosting supplement during winter really helps, as well as strict hygiene routine.

BottleOfJameson · 20/11/2018 09:14

At my DC's school all kids must have full waterproofs at school (either an all in one or separate trousers and jacket) if it's drizzling they go out and play if it's torrential they stay in. Anyone who doesn't have waterproofs or doesn't want to go out has to go to the library during playtime. There was one time they went out without waterproofs and there was a sudden downpour and they all got soaked they weren't left in wet clothes though - they had spare PE kits in the class room so everyone found something dry to change into.

Notreallyhere23 · 20/11/2018 09:17

Our school still has it on days like today, not for drizzle.

It’s not board games or anything like I had back in my school days though, they just stick them in front of the telly.

SoyDora · 20/11/2018 09:18

He needs to learn to zip his coat up, it’s only going to get colder/wetter.
DD1 is in reception and they only have ‘wet play’ when it’s torrential.
