Hi everyone

I'm looking for some reading suggestions for DD who is 6. We now live in the US and there seems to be very little crossover between the American and British books. She goes to a French school where English is an after thought until they get older anyway.
What is everyone reading back home? We would like to keep in touch for if/when we move back and she loves reading anyway. I can get things on Amazon but its harder to discover new books that way.

Or does anyone know any lovely American children's books I should be keeping a look out for?

Apologies if this has been asked a million times before!!

Books for her to read herself or you to read to her?

The rainbow fairies is popular with girls over here.

From 5 and 6 year old DDs' bookshelves... there's a hell of a lot of Rainbow Fairies on there (they're bloody awful but ALL the girls in my eldest's class are barmy on them), Horrid Henry up to the eyeballs, and my eldest is just discovering Roald Dahl books - but she's quite an able reader. She also likes things like the Worst Witch as well, and some of the Enid Blyton books - they've dated badly but she's enjoying them.

There's a whole series of Three Little... (Vampires/Witches/Pirates/Astronauts etc) www.amazon.co.uk/Georgie-Adams/e/B001H6W7JI/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?tag=mumsnetforum-21&qid=1541674105&sr=8-1 that DD1's really enjoyed as well which were nice easy reads for her - she read one as a school reading book and then wanted all the rest in the series as well.

My younger one again is quite a capable reader and likes any of the "Early Reader" type ones that Amazon will bring up.

Plus they both adore really dreadfully terrible joke books, and nice child-level Atlases and the like. Our First Atlas has fallen apart from over-reading.

I'd use picture books made for adults to read to kids at six tbh

Thanks so much... great suggestions to have a look at. At the moment she likes the Claude books that my mum sent us. She can read most of it on her own but finds it a bit tiring so I tend to read every other page.
I dug out a couple of my old Enid Blyton's and couldn't believe how dated they seemed. They were my favourites but I just don't get it now!

If she likes cute animal stories Holly Webb is a good bet. Obviously Roald Dahl books (the twits, fantastic mr fox, Esio trot for shorter chapter books then moving on to the longer ones if she's ready). My naughty little sister is cute in an old fashioned way but my 6 year DS loved them. Jacqueline Wilson books are also great and appeal to girls. David Walliams is also good.

I agree Holly Webb would be a hit with her I am sure, my girls really loved them when they were a bit younger.

happppydays · 13/11/2018 01:18

Thanks will have a look at all of them but I think Holly Webb could be a hit
