Hello,

I'm not sure where to post; hope it's OK to do it here.

I wanted to buy my DD (5) a food flask for a hot lunch sometimes at school. I first chose this one (I like the brand, colour, etc.) but cancelled the order when I realised how small it is (290ml).
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001KC063I/ref=asc_df_B001KC063I56714280/?hvlocphy=1006715&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=256255917267&creative=22110&hvpone&hvlocint&creativeASIN=B001KC063I&th=1&hvpos=1o4&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforum-21&hvtargid=pla-450826526324&hvrand=1318748068666214304

All the reviews are positive, but I wonder how much food their children can have from it?

I don't intend to give her soup and I need something bigger (over 400 ml for sure) that I won't necessarily fill all the way up. So, please could anyone recommend one that is leak-proof, sturdy and that my daughter can use for years?

Thanks a lot!

I'll check what flask my DC have when I get home.

One issue to flag about food flasks is that a 5 year old is likely (my DD used to tell me stories of how hers got passed round most of her friends before someone eventually broke in - and that was at age 9/10) to find it very tricky to open. So don't send her in with one unless you know there is plenty of lunch time assistants able to help with opening.

Also note they tend not to stay as hot if you don't fill them all the way up!

We have that Thermos one - perfectly fine for a 5 year old and older. I fill DD's with pasta or soup and give her a plain roll for dunking.

Wilkos do a good one for £7. My DS has been using it for a couple of years and takes all sorts in with him.

Your username suggest you are familiar with certain country. We have some thermal lunch box sent from that country. Can you go on the site in that country and order one from them? I have never found anything as good in UK.

Hi all, and thanks for your replies!

@RedSky: Thx for your advice; I'll keep what you said in mind. It's OK if the food is not hot, I just don't want DD to have cold food, warm is fine with me.

@Hersetta: I won't use it for soup, only for things like pasta, rice, couscous, etc. How much pasta can you put in a 290 ml I wonder? I saw one this morning at Boots and it seemed absolutely tiny and that's 380ml! I may need to look for pics online of that particular flask with food inside so that I can visualise how much can fit in...

@Betty: thanks for the link; I lie Wilko's products but I want to buy something a bit colourful to make it a bit different from the adult ones at home.

@irvine: lol, do you have a problem with Japan? Why not type it? Grin
I would love to buy from there but the delivery cost will surely be high?

@All: what do you think of this one?

Don't have any problem with the country. We have monthly delivery from Japan, and the postage is about 90-120 pounds for a average sized box.

user789653241 · 07/11/2018 16:57

And it's not paid by me!

SakuraM · 07/11/2018 17:56

@irvine: Grin I wish I could afford to spend £120/ month for international deliveries. Good for you Smile

@Red: I like that one but as I said I'd prefer something more colourful Smile.

Hi, my dd is 7 and has taken a flask of pasta/rice/cottage pie etc nearly every day since she was 4 and still has the same flasks. You get what you pay for I have found and the quality of the deal is important. To make sure the food is warm then you put boiling water in with the lid on whilst you make the food so it goes into a warm flask. Also make sure they are not plastic. My daughter’s is the Thermos one and I’ll find the link now. It is very bright!!

ParisNext · 07/11/2018 18:05

Here is the link. It may be the ones you looked at but let me reassure you that they hold enough food as they take a good potion of pasta and is enough for my older son too. If they are too big they don’t keep warm. I’m quite a fan!

Aladdin BENTO lunch box. Amazon. Holds a full meal.

Hersetta427 · 07/11/2018 21:43

Honestly 290ml is fine and more than enough for that age. My daughter was still using it in yr 6 (age 10) with no issues and plenty of food.

NonaGrey · 07/11/2018 21:48

My SC have the Thermos Stainless King food flask.

It keeps food warm for hours, it’s easy to clean and it comes with a spoon in the lid.

Available a range of colours.

Hi all!

I've asked DDs teacher about packed hot lunches and the school does allow them.

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it. I will take into consideration everything you suggested.

Cheers!
