Waldorf eduction?

Hi everyone. Very quick question. We are looking at putting our son into a Waldorf primary school. We like the play-based, hands-on philosophy, but would love to hear of any experiences people may have had with Waldorf education before we take the plunge! Thank you!

I had a look round one but didn't fancy it. The kids were outside all day in freezing weather.

Actually it was a nursery sorry. No idea about primary schools.

I would look into it very thoroughly. They are not just joce play based schools with lots of wooden toys. There is a whole philosophy/religion behind it around reincarnation etc and you are expected to buy into it. In terms of academics it varies a lot - sone children decide to engage with mainstream education when they are older, some don't. Also due to the difficulties re funding etc there is often a lot of changes in staff. You may also look at eurythmie and the issue of gnomes.

I agree that you need to do a lot of research before you make this decision.

Do not confuse a later start to reading with a child-centric approach.

Waldorf (Steiner) schools have a very strict, undifferentiated curriculum. If you agree with that level of rigidity, and think you have a compliant DC, then it could be a very good fit for you.

Read up on the Steiner approach to education before making the commitment. The surface view is not the reality.

The good bits of Steiner are generally standard practices in a typical state school and the 'interesting' bits are outdated at best.

Some aspects of Waldorf education are beautiful, but yes I agree, really research both 1. The philosophy & 2. How tightly the school holds to the philosophy. Don't get suckered in by the pretty, decide if it's something you can support. Waldorf/Steiner schools expect parents to uphold the philosophy at home - no screens etc.

I went to look at one when I moved back o the UK and couldn't get a school place for my dd. I absolutely hated it. It was insular and with so many odd rules I felt stifled when I was just looking round. Condescending. That's what it was.
