My dd is in tears with her homework and I can't help her as I don't understand it myself. I 've asked endlessly for 'crib' sheets from the teacher and she simply doesn't ever send one. I don't want to do it for her but to support her in understanding it. The homework this week took me about an hour to do and that was just by trial and error - it's so different from when I was 8 (41 years ago...)and i'm sure thatthis is why she now seems reluctant to go to school. she is bright enough i think

can't help with a website, but would be interested to know myself. I got A level maths, so tend to be able to do the questions - but sometimes find that the methods they have been told to use differ to the ones I would use, so a website/book would be useful if anyone knows of one. In the meantime, if you get stuck again, I'm sure if you posted the questions here, or a description of them, you might get the help you need from other MNetters.

thanks. I can generally work out, eventually, the answers but you're right it's the methods that stump me. Last week they had to work out 24 x 4 by putting it into a block of squares and she can do it in her head more quickly than working out how to write out the block of squares. This week it was letters in a bunch of circles and working out which letter represented which number. Took me hours!

I can't see the sense in stopping her from simply knowing the answer but do kind of understand that they need to be taught techniqes. So I would like to know the techniques too! She has mised a lot of school recently through ill health but I have checked around and these activities don't relate to anything they have learnt yet at school.
