7 year old's teacher tells class she loves fortnite

My son is quite sensitive and we don't play computer games much at home (just old fashioned games now and then like sonic the hedgehog). When he first heard from school friends that fortnite is a game where "people kill each other until only one is left alive" he was really upset as he thought this was real - he had nightmares about it! We explained it was a computer game for older kids... Anyway that all passed and he was ok. Then recently his teacher told the class she loves fortnite and then made them all do dances from the game (when my son didn't want to one of the other kids said his Dad would kill him if he didn't - and I thought that maybe the game might encourage this kind of blase reference to killing people!).

I guess I am wanting to know if I have a right to be annoyed. I just don't think that celebrating this game is age appropriate for a class of 6 and 7 year olds? Maybe if they were 12+ it'd be fine? Or am I just being an old fuddy duddy?? What would others think if this was your child's teacher?

My 4 and 3 year olds know how to floss and they’ve never even heard of fortnite. I wouldn’t have an issue with that. Good to get them moving in class!
What the boy said is not on and needs addressing.

Ah ta sirfred! I was impressed the makers had managed to fit it in!

tag is a game about eliminating people

Musical chairs is a game about eliminating people

Games where nobody wins or loses aren't fun

The issue is what the other boy said to your son. Fortnite really has nothing to do with it.

TheSteakBakeOfAwesome · 25/10/2018 19:40

My kids haven't even heard of the game but both know about how to floss. Well flossing is more the aspirational goal as it's more arse wiggling and arm flailing in a hazardous manner.

Geraniumpink · 25/10/2018 20:33

It’s played a lot by that age group upwards, but I am surprised that the teacher mentioned it in school. We discourage talk about it in ours, mainly because it appears to be all consuming and they are supposed to be concentrating on work in class time!

Zaidacapetown · 25/10/2018 20:49

Everyone knows how to floss...whether youve played the game or not! Quite hilarious and I cant seem to get it right whereas my DS and his cousins do it with ease!

jeffboys123 · 28/12/2018 09:37

its a class of 5-6 yo and it was probably end of the day and killing some tie before they can go

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 28/12/2018 09:41

I'd be more worried about your sons overreaction to the mention of the game.

He seems incredibly sensitive for 7 year old.

Nenic · 28/12/2018 09:46

Fortnite is fine for 7 year olds. It’s people who have never seen the game who think it’s unsuitable. It’s a 12 for the online aspect to it not violence

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 28/12/2018 09:51

Ha, I missed this thread Grin How absolutely ridiculous.

You need to be worried about your son's reactions to things as this isn't normal behaviour.

My ds has been playing 12+ games since he was much younger. He is a lovely child with lots of empathy and kindness.
He has been killing monsters since he was about 4/5, yet he has never actually hurt anyone in rl on purpose. Grin

Musical chairs is a game about eliminating people

And a few years ago, there were moves afoot to ban it, precisely for that reason. But not in our obviously totally non politically correct corner of the world, where at a children's party at the time, I waited with baited breath, as my friend ran through the rules, for the reaction to her question, 'And what happens if there isn't a chair for you to sit on?'.

^You're OUT!!!', forty under 8s roared backGrin
