I dont know i I should be making a uss or not, but m DD who is in reception class came home today (with Dad) sporting a huge bruise on her forehead. It is about 2 inches long by about 3/4 inch high. It is not cut but yu can see the imprint of the playground on it!

My concern is that I would have thought that the school wouldhave either called me or had a word when she was let out of her classroom, or given a note in her bag - none of this happened.

I am well aware of the signs to look at for head injuries, and this is not my concern, but I would have expected them to had formally let me know - in school nursery they came home with a note, and in private nursery you had to fill in the accident book - kind of passed on their liabilities.

I intend to write to the head on Monday out of concern - along the lines of 'do you have a policy for head injuries...blah blah -

Am I being unreasonable to make a fuss or do you agree with me? Does any other schools notify you??? Thanks

dd1's school is very slack with regards to this ,she comes home with all sorts of cuts and bruises.

my school is v on the ball

DS(5) came out today with a little note saying "DS had accident - trapped hand & pinched skin"

it is a blood blister & hardly worth noting BUT his school still mentioned it

I think a bump on the head is worth them mentioning IMO

Do you honestly expect someone to keep an eye on your dd every second she is at school?

Did she tell you where and when it happened?

If it was in the playground and their attention wasn't drawn to it-eg-she wasn't that bothered ergo no serious head injury, then no problem.

Do think it is a bit of an over-reaction tbh.

I think the reporting home seems to be linked to the fuss the child made (mean fuss in a non-judging way) and where it happened (ie if they saw it).

DS (5) was walking past his (very nice, male) teaching assistant the other day who "tricked" DS by pointing his attention to something and whipping off his baseball cap. DS (who can be a complete muppet) somehow unbalanced himself and fell spectacularly down a flight of about 10 steps, straight onto his head. Cue much wringing of hands, running to get my nanny who had just dropped him off, compresses, flapping, reports a-plenty, offers of going home, offers of a lie-down etc. Which somewhat bemused DS who didn't have a scratch on him and was comletely fine.

He came back from school about a week later with a huge bruise which he could not even remember doing and said "Dunno. Maybe I fell over or walked into something".

It was at lunchtime, and she was very tearful, and she was taken to the first aid room. I have jsut checked the school brochure on line and it catagorically states that lower school children who bump their head should be sent home with a note. She is a very bright girl and said that no note was given, but that it was written in a special book, which is at least something.

Woosh - I am not over reacting at all, as I am a very laidback level headed person, but the school is very hot on other things, so I feel that this should be brought to their attention, as another chold could come off a lot worse.

Given those facts then it would seem reasonable for some sort of communication with you...is she ok now?

andyrobo237 · 15/06/2007 21:52

She appears to be ok - I have been very careful not to give her ideas that she might have a headache / feel sick / dizzy - as she can suddenly develop symptoms if given the idea!

We took her out for tea (we had planned to anyway, but not told her), and she was fine - ate loads and is now snoring away! She will look a sight in the morning for her dancing lesson and then the school fair - maybe I will clip her fringe back so they can see her head (only joking!!!)

Mine used to get regular bumped head notes, but now they have stickers instead, saying for example 'OUCH', or 'WATCH ME, BUMPED HEAD' with pics of animals with a bandage on or similar.

dinny · 15/06/2007 21:55

Goodness, yes, they should have notified you. Believe it or not, I got called in to school last week as dd had a SPLINTER. yes, really.

hope she's ok now.

Whoooosh · 15/06/2007 22:09

Nutty-that sounds like a really good idea

Andyrobo-glad she is ok.
