Help from teachers - Type 1 Diabetes

Hi,

I wonder if any teachers (without much knowledge of Type 1) would be willing to give me a quote to use anonymously? I am doing a presentation on 'Type 1 Diabetes at school' at a conference and I was hoping to put some quotes on a slide of initial thoughts/first reaction when/if you are told you will have a child with Type 1 in your class? Either replying here or messaging me would be much appreciated.

TIA Smile

Not what you asked for but....

I got diagnosed nearly 6 months ago.

Before that in a training session I remember thinking 'oh, well that doesn't sound too bad really'

Now, I honestly don't understand how ANY cold copes.

I would think....Not a big deal, just means taking blood sugars and eating if necessary if sugars have gone low, even if not snack time. Would need to be careful in gym as diabetics shouldon’t be barefoot. But otherwise nothing special.

I've had 2 children in my class with Type 1, both in KS1. One was diagnosed during the year he was in my class, the other came up from Reception, already diagnosed, several years later.

On both occasions, my first thought was 'I need to read up about this' - this was pre-internet days.

My second thought was 'I need to develop a close relationship with the parents', which I did.

“Just tell me what needs doing”

"What do I need to know to be able to support this child?"

BackforGood · 22/10/2018 23:25

I think the first time it occurred - a little one in Reception when I was only about 3 years into teaching - my first thoughts were 'Okay, how do I help him? How do I find out what I need to know?' (This was pre-internet). I didn't know, at the time about specialist nurses (I don't know if they existed them).
Not really a great 'quote' though Grin
