Educational Magazine for 5 year old DS

My parents (DS grandparents) have offered to buy him a year subscription for a magazine for christmas/birthday (28th December). He loves Paw Patrol but generally loves any magazines.

Any preference on which is the most "educational"? He loves numbers and shapes and patterns etc (suspect he's ASD) but is also really cracking letter formation and short words.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

I'd love ideas too. All I've seen is for 7+

It's a kind offer, but honestly I'd probably tell them to wait at least a year. By the sounds of it he is probably a bit too young yet to enjoy any of the really good children's magazines ( things like Whizz Pop Bang, National Geographic Kids, First News, Aquila etc). But a year is a very long time when you are 5. If they buy him a subscription to a kid's themed magazine (Paw Patrol, any of the character or TV themed ones) his interests will likely have changed in a year. And those kind of magazine are incredibly repetitive - having a full year's worth might drive anyone crazy. (Plus he will most likely surpass the "educational" content of them in what he does in school this year anyway).

If he really likes stories in general then I guess Storytime might be worth while.

Thanks @Caroian they got him national geographic last year (without asking me) and they're all in pristine condition in the Kaplan box in the sitting room as he can't access them yet.

That's true about him moving on from PP etc in a year. I have no idea what to get him. Everything was PP themed last year and he's still with it but might not last 2 more months!!

Will look into Storytime though as he loves
Books etc.

Okido is great

I agree with Caroian, if he can't read it by himself, I don't see the point of getting a year subscription of a magazine.

Have a look at this site. You can find a lot of topics you can share with your dc.

I would ask them to get him books/educational toys, etc., if that's what they want to get for him, or by him any magazine of his choice, every months at the shop.

sanityisamyth · 15/10/2018 23:10

@irvineoneohone They live 6 hours away from him so the monthly shopping trip is out of the question. I love sitting down with him and magazines and doing them with him. He's got lots of books and educational toys in his room but he asks for a magazine every time we go to the shops.

@wtftodo thanks :)

At that age my DD loved Storybox (Bayard).

Yura · 16/10/2018 08:17

Maybe rhey could get him „vouchers“, i.e. slips of papers that he can trade for magazines with you (you‘ll get the money from them, he gtes 12 cards with „voucher for a magazine“ on it)? He can then tell them every minth ehat he has chosen, and you are not committed to one type?

onemouseplace · 16/10/2018 09:30

We got Okido at that age.

user789653241 · 16/10/2018 11:22

I think Yura's idea is a good one, I am saying this as a parent who has parents(gd for my ds) who lives 5000 miles away, and regularly sends money as a birthday/Christmas present.

wtftodo · 16/10/2018 12:34

Just to add, in case you’re concerned that 5 is too young: my daughter got okido as a Christmas present last year, she’s only just turned 5 and still can’t read it herself but there are stories, puzzles, things to cut out etc each magazine that she loves. And we keep them so she can go back to them - they aren’t as disposable as CBeebies etc. This issue has a code cracking thing that she’s been happily doing by hersel and there’s always colouring and other puzzles.

user789653241 · 16/10/2018 13:07

That's the thing. The magazines at this stage is something you can read/ write/colour in/ cut out/ make a mess of it, not something they should keep it in pristine condition for few years later. What's the point of that?

wtftodo · 16/10/2018 13:26

Did I say they were in pristine condition? No. Not that they get trashed either, any more than much loved story or reference books are.
All of them, OP, have been loved, read, drawn in etc and because they are nicer and better quality paper etc are also still around to be returned to.
Unlike the CBeebies etc which are also wildly loved in our house and on trips, but rarely last more than a couple of days.

user789653241 · 16/10/2018 14:29

No, not you, wtftodo, the OP said her dc's last year's magazines were.
I agreed with you how your dc's used them, in fact, wtftodo.
