Primary schools in Shepherds Bush

Hi All,

We are looking at two schools in particular for our child who will start reception in 2019.

We like St Stephen's and we also like Miles Coverdale.

St Stephens appears to be fashioned a bit like a private school, lots of after school activities, house groups for the children, music lessons, musical theatre productions each year, extra lessons for 11+ etc. It still feels pretty grounded and it is state so the frills aren't the same as some private schools, I'm sure, though I really don't know lots about private schools other than my friends all think I should send my child to one!

I'd like to know more about this school if anyone on here has any info. In particular, I wonder whether the academic achievements are more down to the school, or tutoring, which I think only insiders will have insight to! I think it's one of those schools also that attracts parents who can move (either renting or buying) close by, so I wonder about where children tend to live after a while - are the children still local? Anything about the catchment? We're Catholic. How responsive are they to parents and suggestions?

The other school is Miles Coverdale which is on the same site as St Stephen's, but very different in character. It's secular, looks more diverse in terms of pupil population, and does very well academically (though with fewer kids exceeding the average than St Stephen's), but seems like an ambitious no-nonsense head (not that we met her on the school tour).

I really like both.

Any thoughts from anyone who knows these schools would be great!

I know of these schools as my DD lives nearby. St Stephens is CofE Voluntary Aided. Have you read their admission policy to see if you are likely to qualify? Voluntary Aided schools select on CofE attendance so the children that don’t qualify go to MC by default. Whether there is a lot of spare money to spend on tutoring I’m not so sure.

Private schools have smaller classes and teachers trained in individual subjects. The best are not similar to state schools but if you cannot afford the best private schools, then a great state school is a fantastic option.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I'm ok with admissions, no less as 1/ 3 places are offered on a non-religious basis. Thanks also for your thoughts on state/private school.

Beyond that, does anyone have any personal knowledge of the school?

Personal preference is important.
They are very different schools within 50 yards of each other, as you say.

The St. Stephens catchment area has widened as the school has grown... to Askew road. It is a renowned school, responsive and cohesive.

Thank you!

Do you know much about the school, such as whether lots of children are actually tutored and this is reflected in results?

NB. I've just read the bizarre comments about private vs. state schools.
I can assure you that many families send their children to state schools because they prefer them to local prep schools. And get results that are equally good, including entry to independent secondary schools.

Sorry - crossed your last post.
Children at all schools, state or private, who take exams for selective secondary schools are frequently tutored.

Does you children still go to this school? I’m interested in applying for my child but not sure from seeing your review. Is the education good?
