Hi,

I have finally found a book that engaged my 10 year old son to the point he loved it and did not want it to end (he struggles with comprehension but can 'read' exceptionally (the words). He has liked Famous Five before as well (but not the response re the Railway Children). He did like the Hobbit but I overstretched by trying it (it took too long and above his comprehension I think). he has current affairs magazines (This Week) and I read other things to him... I am looking for the next traditional / classic book suitable... do any of you have suggestions. I would love to read him another book as engaging as this one was to him.

I second The Treasure Seekers and Five Children and It and it's sequels by E. Nesbit.

Stig of the Dump is a good read and appealed to my children. Has a fantasy / time travel element though.

If he likes Harry Potter, he might also enjoy the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan.
Also books about Greek myths and legends might suit.

Moonfleet by H Meade Faulkner? Written at the very end of the 19th Century but a tale of smuggling, travel and shipwreck.

E Nesbit most definitely.

I absolutely LOVE The Greengage Summer - probably one of my top 5 books of all time - but I don’t think it’s right for most 10 yo boys (I have a 9 and an 11 yo who are both great readers but I think they wouldn’t appreciate the delicacy of it at that age).

Stig of the Dump is much liked by young children (I haven't read that), and Watership Down, suitable for your son's age and beyond.

I'm delighted he has been encouraged to read The Railway Children, it's a lovely tale. Another classic is The Secret Garden.

what about The Animals of Farthing Wood?

Boy and Going Solo by Roald Dahl
The Silver Sword
The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Quick, Let's get out of Here! Poetry book by Michael Rosen

Children often like series, as they don't have to get to know the characters and can concentrate on getting straight into the story:
Little House on the Prairie
Just William
Narnia
Swallows and Amazons

How about The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper? And maybe the Mary Poppins books which are much darker than the film.

Mine love the Adventure Series by Enid Blyton (I did too at that age): The Island Of Adventure, Castle of Adventure etc
