Books to encourage a love of reading!

My 5 year old has just started in Year 1 and says he hates reading. He struggles a bit I think and is on red level. He finds the books boring at school so I would love to get some new home books to elicit interest and encourage he to read them. He loves nature, science etc... He is a very practical learner and would rather be outside building dens!

There a space x (?) set usually on the book people. That helped my son

Ds2, also 5, enjoys reading about how things work. Those DK and Usborne encyclopaedias about space and the human body and electricity and stuff. Guinness book of records, those old ladybird books about how engines work. Anything with short, informative, interesting paragraphs. He has a good go with his phonics and I fill in the gaps.

Then we scoot through I Am bastard Kipper and I sign his reading journal. Everybody is happy. He gets interesting fiction read to him at bedtime so doesnt miss out on stories.

My DS 4 has just started in Reception, he’s been able to read quite well since he was at Nursery, he had a speech delay so we read to him a lot to encourage his speech and it helped enormously. he loves Julia Donaldson books - Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo, Stick Man etc!

Usborne See Inside books - how things work, science, space, your body etc. They're lovely hardback lift the flap books. The actual words may be tricky for him at this stage, but they'll be lovely for you to read together with him.

Mine have both loved any non fiction books, and their child's atlas has been looked at so much the pages are falling apart and then DD1 discovered the Rainbow Fairies and it's been downhill from there

I'm afraid it's unlikely he's going to love something he finds a struggle no matter what books you provide.

What does he enjoy reading? What interests him? My daughter loves to read about fairies. I recommend going to the library to pick out books that are about his interests. Also storybooks for variety. We order books from Amazon too. What about getting him some new books on science? Space?

Neither of my dc found a love of reading until yr4/5 despite being able readers and having many, many books of all sorts. You can’t force it. Take any pressure off or you’ll put him off even more.
