PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN ENGLAND

My sister is about to start training to be a primary teacher. She's in london and is going to do that course whereby she works as a TA and goes to college one day a week. I've heard a rumour that by training that way , instead of doing a pgce, she will not be able to teach in england or wales. can anyone tell me if this is correct? i trained and teach in scotland and just don't understand the english system very well...

There are lots of different ways to qualify these days this site has details.

If you mean the graduate teaching programme, you can definitely teach in England once you have qualified this way - someone is just finishing this programme at our school & she's just been offered a job for September.

What is her qualification at the end of the course?

oops, i meant won't be able to teach in scot or wales or north ireland, i.e. only england

It's a full teaching qualification, no different from the PGCE as far as I know - she'll be employed as an NQT next year, just like the various ex-PGCE students we've employed.
She originally worked for us as a TA, which was going to be temporary until she started the PGCE, but when that fell through for various reasons, our head suggested she did the GTP.
As far as I remember, she did one day a week at college, plus occasional full weeks, and observation in a class, turning into increasing amounts of teaching. She also had a couple of weeks in a KS 1 class (her usual class is KS 2) & half a term at a different school. I think she's now doing the equivalent of a final teaching practice with the class she's been with most of the time

It specifically says on that site you can teach in Wales - it doesn't mention Scotland or NI, so maybe not.

that sounds like what she's doing...

the link posted earlier suggests she'll be able to teach in wales as well, but not rest of uk.

rest of her family in n.i. and scot so i'm concerned on her behalf....
