Behaviour issues in Yr1 referred to cahms

My son is 5, has been referred to cahms for aggression, lack of focus, impulsiveness.

This assessment is going to take months to come through I'm guessing.

Shall I ask the school to get an educational psychologist to come in too to give them tools to help him manage his behaviour. He's had 2 detentions in a day due to hitting other children.

Help please x

It can’t hurt to ask for an ed psych. Can you ask your GP for a paediatrician referral if you’re concerned too?

I would be surprised if a ed psych visit will come any sooner than a cahms referral. There is typically a long waiting list unless it is a leafy lane school possible with fewer referrals.

If you have children under 5 then you could see if there is a local childrens centre. They many be able to refer you for help. I would also go to the GP and see if they will refer you as well.

Unless you can afford a private assessment (£500) you may have a long wait for an Ed Psych - although well worth it if you do have the funds. I would go to your GP and ask for a referral if you think ADHD might be the cause. In the mean time I would read up as much as possible about behavioural management techniques and see what you can implement in the mean time. Is behaviour at home a problem too or just in the noisy school environment?
