Broken leg but fine for hours afterwards - What's most likely explanation?

Not sure where to ask this.

If a child falls after running into another child, gets up and runs off straight away looking fine at morning playtime, is fine all day although slightly tired in afternoon then is taken to a and e in the evening - is it possible his leg was broken at school during morning playtime?

Yup DS2 did it last year aged 4. Tripped over his own feet getting in the car, cried a bit but nothing major (and stopped when I kissed it better!), then spent the whole day walking around a NT property with my mum with no complaints. It was only when he went to get out of the car when they got home (approx 45 minute drive from NT place) that he screamed his head off and refused to stand up.

Took him to A&E and he'd fractured his tib and fib! Spent the next month in a full length cast. We had to borrow a buggy because he couldn't walk and couldn't manage crutches!

Hi - I seem to think it was identified as a green stick fracture. The type of fracture didn't really mean anything to me at the time this was mentioned.

I've never really been able to settle in my head who I believed and who was at fault - when most likely no one was at fault - the break occurred during morning break but symptoms weren't apparent until hours afterwards. The staff at school had nothing to report as the child got up and ran off at the time so the accident wasn't recorded. There no were symptoms at school and the child did not mention being in pain, just being tired. Later on, the parents took their child to A&E when the swelling and pain started.
