Y1 - How much communication?

DS started Y1 last week.

We have had no communication at all. Nothing from basic info on days they need sports kit to telling us what is expected academically.

Just wanted to know if this is normal now they’re in Y1?

We normally have a meet the teachers night in July (when your child would be in reception). This helps the parents meet me (I’m a year 1 teacher) and I go through routines, what to expect etc... which has very positive feedback (happens in all classes). Before we did this I used to hand put a letter the first week of new year stating about PE etc... I think it would have been good for you to have some information - however thinking to my sons school they havnt done anything (my boy is now in year 2) and I’ll just wait and see how he goes :)

Ds also started y1 last week. We had a transition booklet sent home in July before the end of term, and tomorrow there is a “meet the teacher” session where the teacher will talk to the parents about what they will do in yr 1, when PE is etc. Typically they have 2 days notice for these sessions and they are at 3.30pm so I will be in work (hopefully DH will go instead)

My son has just started year 1. We had a meeting after school at the end of last year that went through it but if you couldn't attend that you'd be entirely clueless.

Both DS's schools have meet the teacher events at the end of term. In a few weeks DS2's school will have a general curriculum evening - they do each year.

Other than that, info generally in newsletters from both schools.

we had a half termly newsletter.
It's early in the term though, give the teachers a chance!!

Thanks everyone, it sounds like we might be due a letter at some point. I’ll wait and see if anything turns up.

We got a 1 page letter with what day homework is set/due in, PE days, spellings and reading books. Then we were invited to an information evening where they went over the curriculum, expectations and info in the phonics check. They told us the week the phonics check happens, wrote it down, sent a text with it on and begged/pleaded with us not to book a holiday for that week.

We get a "letter" emailed to us at the beginning of the school year with all the useful info. There's also a meet the teacher evening where they basically do a little talk telling us all this stuff.

We had the usual form to fill in, about contact details/who is authorised to collect your dc etc, on Thursday and the homework bag on Friday. Nothing else as yet, but the school usually sends a general newsletter each half-term and a Year specific one each term which gives details of what the dc will be studying that term and details of trips and dates when parents are invited in for sample lessons. We sent the PE Kit in on the first day and it will stay at school (until half-term when hopefully dc will bring it home for it to be washed) so it doesn't matter which day he has PE. Also the school website 'diary dates' section is usually up to date for the current half-term.

We get a meet the teacher slot this week to talk through it all in terms of routine etc. I sent PE kit and wellies in towards the end of the first week - to get it out of our front porch basically. There's usually a newsletter but that tends to come out toward the end of this week from what I recall from last year.

So by this point (I've had one just leave Y1 and one just going in so I've got a fair picture of how our school does it) we've had very little really... it all tends to come home this week coming up.

Normal. In DD's school we had learned from Reception year that PE kits are brought into school on the first day of every half term, and left there (obviously this might not be the same for all schools!). There was no particular need for parents to know which days are PE days.

I think it took a fortnight or so before the first homework/book bag was sent home, and in it there was a letter with a timetable and general info, including an invitation to a parent briefing held in October.
