Yesterday on the radio the presenter said she had made chocolate brownies specially for the reception home visit.
I think this sounds excessive but is it a thing?
It sound s like a lovely idea, has anyone else to to special effort for the visit?

We had 3 hour sessions at school before holidays, teacher did 3 visits to nursey, my son is sen so we also had 2 transtiton meetings. After school holidays we had a teacher visits so the teacher could 're introduce herself after the long holidays (7 weeks) he finally starts on full days on Monday. Everyone did the same apart from the transition meetings.

Even our SAHMs used the free 15 hours in our area. Smile

My DS went to the local pre school attended two settling in sessions but still had a home visit. Teacher and Ta as foundation class went back few days later. I found it hugely useful as his grandparents had just moved abroad. My DS loved showing them his cat etc don't make cake as other posters said they will be happy with a glass of water.

Our home visit lasted for 45 mins and we had two teachers, one spoke to me whilst one played with DC.

I offered them tea, coffee or cold drink, they just asked for water.

I think brownies are OTT. I do home visits for my job sometimes and I never accept food, I would decline and it's awkward if someone has prepared a cake stand especially.

I wouldn't. I love cakes but home made cakes from a parent I don't know I would't be sure on, a pack of biscuits to offer with a cuppa maybe, but even then don't be offended if they say no, because there are a lot of home visits and only so many cups of tea/biscuits you can have.

My son made cakes for his teacher visit, he is quite shy and I think it helped him feel more relaxed- he was really excited about offering them. I wondered whether I should comment on our strict kitchen hygiene practices but they happily accepted a cake before I made any (probably awkward) comment!

Like others I assumed the teacher would want to be in and out not sitting around having a natter and a brownie with another one of the 30 sets of new parents.

We offered cakes, but they weren't accepted, so I wouldn't make some specially.

DD hid behind me for the duration of the visit (20 mins) - about 40 mins might have got her to interact (she absolutely refused to speak to the two staff who came), but I'm told by teacher friends that seeing a child's home is very useful.

Hwe had a home visit for both nursery and reception (different schools) and a visit to each.
The year R visitors were his class teacher and the nursery teacher and the visit was about 45 mins. One teacher played with dgs both with his toys and toys she had brought with her, whilst the other talked to my dd, then they alternated and the teacher working with dgs asked him questions and carried out a mini assessment.
Both accepted a cold drink, food wasn't offered.

In the case of DS last school it was purely so they could tell OFSTED they'd done it. They were in and out in about 10 minutes. A day's annual leave for me and hanging round the house waiting for them to turn up. Strangely, his current school don't do visits and meet the needs of much more varied intake of children. Lack of home visits doesn't seem to be any impediment.

Fairly sure the point of ours was to check if we lived at the adress we had stated on the application. They were here for less than ten minutes.
