When do you find out about INSET?

Just wondering how my kids school compares. We were told today that there’s an INSET on 23 Sept, which seems pretty short notice. No info yet on the rest of the year.

That seems very short notice unless there is a very specific reason which means notice wasn't possible.

The inset days are set out on the term dates document at my DC's school. It is published two years in advance.

2 years! That’s brilliant. Schools communication is generally rubbish.

Dates have been on every school letter for a good few months now. I've definitely had them in my calendar for this coming year since about the start of June but I think they were out long before then and it's only when I've got round to actually doing it.

SirNilsOlav · 04/09/2018 19:16

Isn't the 23rd a Sunday this year? Is it possible they mean next year and have cocked up?

wonderstuff · 04/09/2018 19:17

You’re right, it’s 24th, my bad.

Definitely this year, but I’ve mistyped, it’s 24th. ParentMail sent out at 11am today. No idea if any other INSET dates this academic year.

We get a provisional set of dates a year in advance (they usually fall on either Fridays or Mondays of the same weeks of the year). I've only seen them change one date in 5 years.

I would be annoyed at such short notice.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/09/2018 19:57

Are you absolutely sure that this is the first notification you've had about it? This isn't just a reminder?

If so, yes it's a poor show and not much notice for many. However, when you have young children in a school setting, it is massively important to have back-up plans in place for when things happen, be it snow days, child's illness, the boiler breaks down or whatever. This is for your own peace of mind, more than anything else.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 04/09/2018 19:58

We don’t know any of ours yet

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 04/09/2018 20:00

Normally all term dates and important dates last week of term but new head this year and got nada

SirNilsOlav · 04/09/2018 20:48

Ah, I asked as DS school send an update every term and last term they sent out Summer 2019 by mistake at 4pm on a Friday. Caused panic in the parents WhatsApp group until someone realised.

Unless it's something unavoidable that they've only just found out about, I think it is pretty bad form to only have said now for one this year.

wonderstuff · 04/09/2018 21:45

Just double checked on the year Facebook group. One of the school clubs were told about it in July, the parents however were told today.

One of many things that this ‘outstanding’ school has done that defy common sense.

It's likely that the school was waiting to hear back from a particular speaker before being able to confirm the INSET day with everyone.

C0untDucku1a · 04/09/2018 22:20

This is ridiculous.

Have you thoroughly checked the school website, not facebook, for term dates?

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 04/09/2018 22:25

Usually in the July newsletter at the end of the academic year so you have the summer to plan

wonderstuff · 04/09/2018 22:34

I have checked back, nothing at all. They’ve also not released any other inset dates for this academic year.

In July they asked for deposits of £150 and £100 for residential trips for year 4 and 6 with less than a months notice (guess what year my kids are in)! Communication to parents is not a strength.

My little one started reception yesterday and came home with a school diary, it has a calender which lists inset days and various other school events.

Hersetta427 · 05/09/2018 09:23

We have had the calendar for this acedemic year including insets for at least 6 months. I am expecting the one for 2019-20 before Xmas.
