School Lunch Box

NGC2017 · 04/09/2018 10:54

Hi

My son starts school tomorrow and I will be sending him with a packed lunch as he can be pretty fussy so I want to make sure he will eat something.
Are there any things that aren't allowed in their lunchbox?

TIA xx

Tends to change from school to school so I would look on their website and see if there is a policy.

Most common no nos are
fizzy drinks/ drinks in glassbottles
nuts
chocolate

However I have heard of some very over the top ones too so I would look for the specific schools policy

Pop into the school web page and see if there’s a policy.

All schools are different and I’ve heard a huge range of what’s allowed/not.

It generally differs between schools but a rough example of thigs which I would not include:

Fizzy pop
Chocolate bars and cake bars
Crisps
Anything with nuts in

Your best bet though is to check with the school.

many thanks, going to call the school

Ours was similar to above:-

No fizzy pop prefably water
No crisps
No chocolate
No sweets
No cake bars etc
No biscuits
NOTHING CONTAINIG NUTS. For example Nutella chocolate spread, cereal bars with nuts in etc.

What did the school as OP?

NGC2017 · 04/09/2018 14:47

Haven't been able to get through to school and their website doesn't say much. Packed lunches seem pretty restricted then. I don't get why they can't have a biscuit or cake in their packed lunches when they have it with a school meal. Looks like a sandwich and a banana then, as my son won't touch raw veg sticks

I think they can almost always have a yogurt or similar for desert if he'll eat that?

NGC2017 · 04/09/2018 18:38

I managed to call and was just told a sandwich and a piece of fruit. Seems very little compared to the school dinner menu?

i think that if the school are providing cake for the school dinners, then you should be absolutely fine slipping in a small pack of biscuits/ a cake bar. if your DS's school is anything like my DC's one, they don't go round checking the lunch boxes. To get round this rule if you are unsure about putting cake in though, cut bread into small strips. get no nut chocolate spread, spread it onto the bread strips and roll up. my Dcs love this .that way it's not technically cake.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 04/09/2018 18:43

forgot to mention- you could also put in a bag of fruit stars.

“No nuts” often means “no seeds either”, which rules out houmous as a sandwhich filling. Worth checking with the school if you are likely to have houmous.

Umm hummous is made from chickpeas which are a legume not a seed. Unless schools are ruling out baked beans as well, that is bonkers

ifigoup · 04/09/2018 19:00

Hummous has also got tahini in it, which is made from sesame seeds.

LockedOutOfMN · 04/09/2018 19:01

Veterinari I think hummus is banned for the tahini.

At our school we have a number of students and 2 staff members who can't have sesame.

cricketmum84 · 04/09/2018 19:05

Frubes are great for lunchboxes / especially if you freeze them when it's warm weather. We can send a chocolate biscuit but not a chocolate bar so for eg a penguin bar would be ok but a mars bar would not be. I've just made DD a small batch of cold pasta salad with baby corn, sugar snap peas and cooked chicken. She will take a small portion of that as she gets bored of sandwiches.

She takes and brings home the same piece of fruit all week until I relent and bin it. Grin

BikeRunSki · 04/09/2018 19:05

Yes sorry, it’s the sesame/tahini in houmous which makes houmous banned at our school.

LockedOutOfMN · 04/09/2018 19:06

NGC2017 To start with I'd go for things that aren't too messy or fussy to eat like sliced bread sandwiches with sliced ham, turkey, and / or cheese, cold chicken nuggets, fruit or veg cut into bite size pieces, cereal bar, box of raisins.

I also would stick to relatively cheap stuff as inevitably some will come home hot and squashed and uneaten and have to go in the bin.

Through trial and error you will discover what works best.

NGC2017 · 04/09/2018 19:10

Thanks for all the ideas. My son always has a banana with his breakfast. One will go in his lunchbox as he doesn't like any others. I doubt it will get eaten though.
You are right though if they put a pudding of the menu each day, a small chocolate or biscuit can't hurt

OP posts:
Veterinari · 06/09/2018 06:43

Ah! Sorry yes the tahini makes sense! I would never have thought of that.

Dogatemyhomework666 · 06/09/2018 21:10

We allow one sweet item such as a small piece of cake or a biscuit...no chocolate bars or sweets.
No nuts
No fizzy drinks

And I think that's about it. But it all depends on if there are children with allergies in the school.

My son takes a sandwich, yogurt, fruit, crisps and a cereal bar. He often has the fruit or cereal bar as a snack at break time.
