Meet the teacher evening.

Dd, going into year 1, has a "meet the teacher" after pick up a few days into term. I'll have DS (22 mths) with me, so will mostly be trying to stop him squeal/climb things/look like I'm not a completely incompetent parent.

No real clue about what to expect. Is there anything I should be asking or letting teacher know? Should I expect teacher to have any clue who DD is? Is this the time to discuss any concerns, or is it a smile politely, nod, collect forms kind of event? Anyone got any experience?

if they are like the ones at my son's school its been organised so the parents can see what the teacher looks like as not everyone drops off or picks up at school. They normally talk a little bit about what they are teaching this year and how and give you info like its PE on a Wednesday and I change reading books on a Thursday.

We then get a chance to ask questions which generally but they are generic rather than about their child normally.

ours was usually a sit and listen type thing.... teacher explained the homework, the reading books and when theyre changed, and about pe, etc....

Thanks. So take a diary and any unanswered questions about routine/practicalities, rather than child specific.

Our school do them for all the classes - usually it's just routines with things like changing reading books, what days they do PE on, who's teaching the class on what days if there's a job share arrangement going on and a "oh by the way any parents that want to come in and help we really really love you" bit tacked on the end.

Bit of an excuse to see the new teacher's face as well if we're honest - and for them to put parental faces to the children in question (think my face is fairly well known already though!)

I found them helpful last year - especially with one of mine transferring into the school further up and not knowing the things everyone else already knew, and the other one having very very poor speech at that point (it's come on amazingly - primarily because of the work school were doing with her cos the fucking SALT's been bog all use ) so I had a chance of deciphering what on earth she was trying to tell me about - she was in reception so there was a lot of explaining how that school in particular tended to structure their day and week.

I would suggest if there IS anything you want to raise then write it down and then if little one is being distracting you can at least hand it to the teacher and perhaps arrange to discuss it at another time

Ours are a week or so into term and on a drop in basis. Our teachers normally have a couple of leaflets about things like the curriculum that year and then have a word with each parent on an individual basis to answer any questions and let you know how they have been settling in. Also useful to see where their new classrooms are!

You also won't be the only one with a wriggly toddler if ours have been anything to go by.

Generally ours have been a bit of a talk from the teacher.....
have PE kit in school every day.... we change book bags on a Wednesday..... only X or y allowed as snacks...... this term we will be studying Z and it is helpful if you....... etc. etc

then afterwards there is a bit of 'free time' when you can let the teacher know he is supposed to wear glasses / check they know about his allergy / etc.

Like others ours are just a little talk about what day PE is on what to bring in for show and tell etc. Quite a few parents in DS's year don't come and just get the info from other parents.
