School shoes

My daughter starts school in September.

What does everyone think about school shoes - do we get a best pair and a school pair of shoes too?

What's a best pair? My ds's primary school had to have indoor shoes plus shoes for playtime/walking to and from school so had black school shoes plus trainers for wearing within the school building

LIZS · 31/07/2018 08:22

Realistically when will a "best" pair be worn if she is at school 5 days a week.

IVEgotthePOWER · 31/07/2018 08:23

Confused i am lost

We have always managed with school shoes and then another pair of shoes (either winter boots or trainers) for home.

funmummy48 · 31/07/2018 08:26

We've always just had school shoes and looked after them so they were smart enough for "best". In addition we had trainers & sandals in the summer and boots in the winter.

Chocolota · 31/07/2018 08:32

School shoes, PE pumps/plimsols/whatever you call them, some schools ask for outdoor trainers too. Plus wellies, cheap shoes for all the birthday parties they get invited to in Reception, and maybe warm boots too x

School shoes plus trainers, sandals, winter boots, and some sparkly monstrosities we picked up at a charity shop that dd insists on wearing 99 percent of the time...

Yura · 31/07/2018 09:22

my son (year 1) has

  • school shoes (by far hus most expensive shoes)
  • school trainers (stat at school)
  • at home trainers (he is sporty and does athletics - not really needed for a more sedentary child)
  • either winterboots (waterproof), sandals or trainer type shoes, depending on season
  • wellies
EllenJanesthickerknickers · 31/07/2018 09:25

School shoes, and Clarks trainers for the weekend/holidays. Sandals in summer and wellies. Winter boots maybe more for girls?

Mol1628 · 31/07/2018 09:35

School shoes, at home casual trainers, wellies and sand shoes for PE.

Frogletmamma · 31/07/2018 10:08

School shoes plus about 6 pairs of cheap trainers for wading through bogs at scout camp.

reluctantbrit · 31/07/2018 10:31

DD just finished primary and has/had:

black school shoes
normal casual shoes, mary jane type or laces depending on season. she didn't like wearing trousers and trainers and skirts/dresses is a big no.
Trainers for holiday camps and park
Sandals in Summer and proper winter boots in winter
Hiking shoes/boots for Brownies and Scouts
Wellies (dictated by forest school, hated by DD as she can't walk in them)

Her casual shoes are basically the same brand/quality as her school shoes, costing an arm and a leg each time she needed new shoes but until she moved into adult sizes she couldn't wear any cheap brands. Even now, an adult size 5, I have to be careful where to go and buy, the girl inherited my stupid sensitive feet.

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 31/07/2018 10:39

My thoughts are you can buy the crap ones from primark, but at the rate they need replacing, you could have bought a decant, smart, appropriate pair of Start-Rite ones.

ScattyCharly · 31/07/2018 10:41

You get a pair of black shoes for school and a pair of any shoes/trainers you like for home. Your school might require plimsolls/trainers as well.

aperolspritzplease · 31/07/2018 10:45

Do you mean if you dont get 'best' shoes she'ds wear her school shoes all the time?

Mine have had a various selection of shoes / trainers / boots / sandals / sparkly party shoes in addition to school shoes. Even at 4 when they started school they wouldn't have wanted to wear their school shoes when not at school.

IceCreamFace · 31/07/2018 12:40

Unless the school makes them change shoes for play time make sure the school shoes are comfortable for running around in as that's the most important bit (within the school uniform code of course). I can't imagine a 5 year old has much use for a "best" pair of shoes but you certainly wouldn't want her worrying all the time about keeping her school shoes neat and tidy.

IceCreamFace · 31/07/2018 12:42

My DS wears black trainers for school and a more colourful pair of trainers at home (we live rurally so might be running through muddy fields etc), then a pair of sandals and a pair of wellies.

keepingbees · 31/07/2018 12:43

I always buy good quality school shoes and have them properly fitted. They are worn all day and take a battering at play times, cheap shoes barely last half a term on my kids.

Mine have cheaper smart shoes, the sort worn to parties that will only be worn for a couple of hours and are quickly outgrown without much use.

5000KallaxHoles · 31/07/2018 13:16

Mine seem to breed shoes. They've got a pair of school shoes each (to be honest I usually just use supermarket ones and they've lasted about 2/3 of the year), boots, trainers, sandals, slippers and then my mum is forever finding cute or "a good bargain" shoes and coats for them as well. Plus two pairs of wellies (they keep one pair in school all year) each.

They're allowed boots to school in the winter so wear them a lot of the time as well.

Thanks everyone

Just needed a idea of what to do.

She will be at school 5 days a week yes, but we do lots of walking and going to the park and she is really active and enjoys going on her scooter and also her bike too. She has to have start rite shoes as well, as recommended by a chiropodist

She can have pumps for P.E and can wear wellies too and sandals but not for long periods of time
