Holidays and school work but not really!

DD just finished year 6 & DS year 4. They both are average or just tipping above. We are not really ones for doing school work in the holidays but I do worry they may forget everything! DD struggles with Maths - passed SATs just. If I tried in any way to slip in any "school" type work it would not go down well! After some sneaky ideas. Thought cooking or making bath bombs may be appealing. They both read most nights. We are going on holiday camping with no WIFI which is a bonus in my eyes as the old gadgetry seems to be taking over! Any other ideas?

Build some angles and measuring into building stuff out of sticks while camping. Do some map reading. Challenge each of them to think up the cheapest campfire meal they can and get them to budget it out and make it. Read timetables if you are going on any public transport or the tide timetables at the beach. teach them some card games that need maths. or dice games

Bath bombs and cooking are good ideas. You could also try making slime, loads of recipes online and they are about the right age to think its cool.

Or trick them with gadgetry. There are lots of free maths games online, which I've convinced DD aren't school work because they are games Grin DS says he's not that stupid, hasn't seen through Dungeons and Dragons yet though.

If they like reading, you can still get the usborne puzzle adventure books, not really maths but it would at least keep their minds busy.

What's Dungeons & Dragons? I like the sound of trickery!

Get them hooked on card games. Great when camping and if you look online you could find games to target particular maths skills.

If you want to keep up writing you could buy them nice notebooks to keep journals (secret or not), take friends addresses on holiday and write postcards, publish a weekly newspaper or blog about their holiday activities, encourage storytelling -again great when camping- do ghost stories in a spooky setting etc.
If they have particular interests you could encourage them to research (online/books) and make their own project book/ models etc.

Have fun!
