Reception school report

Just wondering if "emerging" means nearly at "expected" or if it means anything below " expected ". Ds got expected for a few things and emerging for everything else on his school report. I know he is academically below average but I don't really understand the details. As soon as I work out what these things mean then the system changes, either because he has got older or just because. He's working on set 1 for phonics and most of the other children are on set 6 or above according to the chart on the classroom wall.

'Emerging' means that the school have seen whatever it is they are describing, but that he's not "got it automatically" yet.

A bit like when you start to drive, and you have to think

Clutch in, put into first gear, engage biting point' release handbreak', check mirrors, check blindspot, move off gently. But when you are a confident driver, you just do all that without having to run it through your mind like a check list - it's just automatic.

Ah, that makes sense, thankyou.

I really think you don't know anything about a child's real ability yet in reception. Some children are not ready for school just yet.
My ds is a lot older now. Some of his friend's parents told me their child can't do this and that in reception or in early ks1.Some of those children become top set in KS2.
Just keep doing basic work like reading with them regularly, encourage them to get familiar with numbers in everyday life when you have chance. They are still very young.

Thankyou. TBH it was mainly curiosity on my part. And when his speech therapist or paediatrician ask how he is getting on at school it's useful to know what it all means.

He is very happy at school which is the most important thing.
