Can someone do this Y4 maths question for me please?

Brain is muddled...

There are 170 people in a hall.
There are 6 times as many girls as boys.
There are 6 more boys than teachers.
How many teachers are there?

I have Maths A level...but have also been drinking wine....

This has reduced me to sweaty mess! I have any form of maths!

Hate not have!

Is it algebra?

X + 6Y + (X-6) = 170

Assumed so and came up with similar equation but then thought may be too complicated for y4??

I always pick a figure to start with and then work up or down.

And is that even solvable., and why am I bothered?!

There are 16 teachers.

22 boys x 6 = 132 girls.
Add the 22 boys to equal 154 students which means there are 16 people left over so all must be teachers as 16 is less than 22!

But is there a way of working it out other than just trial and error? I need workings!

X + 6X + (X-6) = 170

Rearrange to get X on one side and numbers on the other:

8X = 176

Therefore X = 22 = number of boys
Number of teachers = X - 6 = 16

16 teachers? 22 boys and 132 girls

Boys X + 6
Girls 6x + 36
Add them up
So 8x + 42 is 170
X is 16

I haven't done simultaneous equations for years and am pleased I got the right answer!

It’s X + 6X+ (X-6) = 170 where X is the number of boys

Or in other words, 8X= 176 and so there are 22 boys, 16 teachers and 132 girls

And I am very slow at typing!

I may have to go and wake DC up to show them....

I don't think that algebra is on the curriculum for Y4, although I'm sure some of them could work it through with help. Quite big numbers to be working with if they're expecting trial and error

G = 6B
T = B-6
G+B+T=170
6B+B+B-6=170
8B=176
B=22
T=16

girls = 6 x boys = 6b

teachers = boys - 6 = (b - 6)

6b + b + (b - 6) = 170

7b + (b - 6) = 170

8b = 170 + 6

8b = 176

b = 176 / 8 = 22

teachers = b - 6 = 22 - 6 = 16

I got 15 teachers.
170= G+ B+ T
170 = G + B+B-6
170=6B + B +B -6
170 = 8B -6
176= 8B

176/8= 21
21-6= 15 teachers

My dd is year 4 and wouldn't have a clue how to do this! Definitely not something they've been doing this year.
