Spelling in Year 6 help please

I have a child about to finish year 5. Working within expectation for English but being seriously let down by poor spelling. Gets full marks on weekly spelling test as has a reasonable memory but in written work spelling is below what would be expected for age.
Will encourage reading over the 6 weeks of summer holidays but can anyone recommend spelling books or apps that might help with the sounds/basics? As I say ‘learning words’ doesn’t seem to help, I think he needs to go back to sounds?
My other 2 found spellings a breeze, so I’m new to this.
Thank you

Mine play Wordscapes - lots of similar on apps - it's fun repetitive and fairly addictive

If you want more formal lol at letters and sounds

It goes through the phases and there games to play

Also look at oxford owl for free audio books

Try googling Nessy. It was developed for children with dyslexia but IMO it’s a really effective approach to help children learn spelling patterns and predict based on letter and sound patterns the most likely correct spelling. We use it as a key strategy across the school and find it’s really successful particularly for children who find spelling more difficult.

I’m really looking for something more formal. Working on sound groups. We play scrabble type games but it’s not making enough of a difference.
There are hundreds of apps and books but was hoping someone could recommend a really good one.
Thank you

Nessy is brilliant

Lots of spelling app and books

If he's struggling with phonics sight reading isn't the way to go

Your DC is showing classic signs of mild dyslexia.

Citylivingwithdogs · 17/07/2018 23:54

Thank you very much. Will look at Nessy for the summer. Yes, Changemyname, could be mildly dyslexic. Has been tested and spelling is really the only problem. If dyslexic, it’s only mildly.
I’m happy to use any system that is suitable for children with dyslexia. Bright child so may be difficult to engage if ‘too babyish’. 10 year old boys words, not mine.

I my dd(9) is also a poor speller (but great reader, above expectations). Reading this thread has made me consider Nessy. Does anyone else recommend it for a 9 year old?

If you think he needs to go back to sounds, then Apples and Pears might be the way forwards. I think a number of parents on here have used it successfully.

Citylivingwithdogs · 18/07/2018 18:24

I’ve not heard of Apples and Pears; will look into it, thank you.

whsmith do their own spelling book in with all the study books. they do a year 3/4 one and a 5/6 one with the words they are expected to know in it. they are A5 in size, can't remember the actual title of the books but you will find them on the website or in store. they break the words down into groups of about 5 which is manageable to do in an evening and they are in spelling pattern groups rather than just random, they explain the origin of the words which makes them easier to remember in my opiniong. my daughter struggles terribly in spelling but this has made her much more consistent.

Does the school use Spellodrome? This has really helped my dgs this year. He just finished Yr6.

Citylivingwithdogs · 19/07/2018 21:17

No, not come across Spellodrome thegreylady. I will investigate!

Ifonly his spelling tests are in spelling groups but doesn’t seem to help remembering them a few weeks after the test.

I have a reluctant reader too, so that’s probably not helping. Loves stories but not reading them himself.
