Expected level of reading year 1

My son has just been given his end of term report. In his reading log they haven't read with him since April. He reads chapter books at home such as Dahl, horrid Henry with no error. He brings home purple and copper books. I'm really unhappy. What is the level meant to be. I work in a school and most kids can't read what my son can only about 5 can

What is it that makes you unhappy?

Purple and I assume brown, rather than copper, is fine.

Its not just about reading the words....they need to be able to also answer comprehension questions and be able to understand the text.

eg.... how does bob feel? how do you know bob feels like this? what could bob do next? Can you find a verb? can you point to a conjunction? etc.

In order to be able to learn comprehension skills they need to be able to read the text easily so may be simpler books sent home. (my dd's teacher explained it like this as she can easily read what she is given and can read chapter books at home).

Well purple is about average for year 2 I think, and brown for year 4 (with a few bands in between so that seems odd that he’d be given those two), so that doesn’t sound wildly out of place with what he’s reading at home? My daughter reads Blyton/Dahl/Rowling etc at home and is on Lime at school, which is one below Brown.

Maybe copper is gold which is next up from purple I believe.

I don’t see the problem, this is where they should be in year two so he is doing really well

The ort ks2 Brown is also turq/purple in ks1

Why are you unhappy? Is that the attainment he has been given?
And yes, can read fluently without mistakes doesn't equate in good with other stuff like comprehension. And my ds hardly ever had 1-1 reading with a teacher or ta. It's common in state school, I believe. But they maybe asked to read here and there during lessons, etc. Doesn't mean teachers aren't aware of the children's ability.
You really need to speak to the teacher.

My DD is a good reader but on torquoise books.
Her school definitely like you to read most of the books in a level before moving you on.
In other schools I think she would be considerably higher as she is one of the best readers in her class.
This possibly frustrates me a little but actually what is the rush.
She is reading very well and easily copes with every new level.
She understands the books well and I would say reading has very much clicked with her this year.
She did incredibly well in the phonics screening so must be doing OK.
She isn’t reading chapter books yet but that is more laziness on her part rather than lack of ability.
Again she will so that when she is ready.

As for reading with teacher - i’m not sure how often she does that. She reads at home daily.
