Hi,

Have moved to the area very recently and have been offered a place at Hampton Wick Infant & Nursery School in September for my DD1. This was not our first choice and I do not know much as yet about this school. Does anyone know anything about it or it's attached school St John the Baptist, where they transfer gaed 6 or so? Any advice much appreciated.

I am in the area and know that some children in my street go there (my DC are too young) and seem very happy with it - I get the impression it is a small friendly school and it has good results. I don't know much about St Johns, but I do know they had a new headmistress in the last couple of years who is very keen to improve it. I'm guessing that may be Collis was your first choice(?) but I'm afraid I hear that it's really really oversubscribed.

Thanks for that poppetmum. Yes you guessed right, Collis was indeed our first choice. We moved really close to be near the school and it still wasn't close enough to get a place. I've looked at the stats for st john's and it seems to be coming in at average. I'm just aware that of course results aren't everything and was keen to get some first hand experiences from other parents.

On St Johns, I went on an open day and found out that they did not have a head for some time (hence I imagine that's why results may be went down/are average) but the new head is keen to improve: has been getting in new teachers etc. Why not make an appointment to go and meet her? There have been some other threads before on MN about schools in Teddington/Hampton wick - so may be do a search as there may be others on here who know a bit more than me.
I wonder just how close to Collis you have to live to get in?? I think they had lots of siblings this year which would not help you.

mrshenry · 01/06/2007 21:55

Yes, I've done a search but can not find any info on St John's unfortunately, so any other Teddington mums with any other info, please let me know! We moved really close to Collis, took about 5 minutes to walk there and even the head agreed our address stood a very good chance but to no avail. This whole school admission process is a nightmare!! I think you rae right, I should meet with the head and have a look around before making any decisions. Thanks for the advice.

i don't know anything about teddington schools but i do know that this years cut off distance for collis was 769 metres. and yes the schools admission process is a joke in this borough

slondonmum · 03/06/2007 13:20

you never know you still might get a place in Collis in the summer if you live that near. There is often movement - even at the popular schools so keep phoning them up right till the last moment.

Comeoveneer is a Thames Ditton'ite she might know but she's away this weekend I think.

Thanks all for your comments. Looks like we'll just have to hope that a place comes up at our preferred school and try and do some more research on the alternatives. Although there is a lovely private school nearby...think I need to butter up d/h before going down that route though.

Shakespeare wrote “ tis sharper than a serpents tooth to have a thankless child” or words to that effect.

Clearly Shakespeare never met a disgruntled parent.

Have you thought longer term? We used to live in Teddington but left as the secondaries really aren't very good given the demographic. Neighbouring areas had much higher performing secondaries.

This may have changed since we left as I'm not as in touch with the area as I used to be but something to be mindful of perhaps?

Good luck

You’d think they probably did as this thread is now 16 years old so OP’s DC will be heading off to uni or work in the coming weeks!!

@LovedFedAndNoonesDead

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I assume the person writing the long message has a grudge to bear against Collis and revived this and probably the other Collis
threads to do so!
