Oh FFS. 'Secret' tutors? This is everything that is wrong with the grammar school system.

Purplepaper · 16/07/2018 18:25

I'm only going by what I've read on mumsnet about the hush hush/secret tutors....I'm happy to have any good recommendations too.

I live in a similar area- nothing secret here. There are 3 or 4 tutors around here that most people use- just ask parents with kids in the year above you at school.

Purplepaper · 17/07/2018 09:22

Helloooooooo1 thanks for your reply. I'm finding the parents in my year group and the one above very secretive in my school. I have exhausted all existing contacts I know. In my school the 11 plus camp of parents there are particular really large circle who all know each other from current year and year above and they only tell their friends who are from a specific location!

I think you may have read about the infamous Tiffin tutor/s? I have no experience of them and I actually think since the tests changed a few years back their value declined and I think they retired. You honestly don't need them!

Just get yourself a tutor you feel comfortable with. If you're happy and your child is happy that's enough. When we did Tiffin (DD got in but went elsewhere) we just used a local tutor recommended by Mums at school. I'm honestly surprised you can't get a recommendation.

Word of caution though - even with a tutor and an able child the odds aren't great so you need to big up the other options. I think that now the entrance tests are more English and Maths it's all useful prep compared to the old days of NVR and VR drilling.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is very reassuring to know that I don't need those infamous tiffin tutors.

Yes unfortunately no one wants to tell me at the school so I'm having to research myself. I would have preferred recommendations

@Purplepaper - I'm afraid I'm not in the right area to help but I wish you the best of luck! I got our tutor from a Mum at school - in fact everyone in the school used her so no hiding the fact. I think she had a big part to play in the school's SATs results Wink

If the Mums at school aren't sharing maybe try Brownies Mums or Mums in another setting? Or find a way of talking to Mums of children who've recently been successful and are feeling more relaxed about sharing?

Post in the Richmond local mumsnet site? You may catch other local mums that are not necessarily checking the primary education posts

best of luck xxx

Guess that was the Walsh people? They mostly taught VR and NVR so no longer as relevant. Pretty sure they’ve retired. They published some VR books though and they were really hard and good prep cos there are still some VR type questions in the Tiffin exams (at least there were a couple years ago)

Thanks for replying. Any ideas who has replaced the Walsh's then? I didnt realise they had books too will try and find this.

No idea I'm afraid. We did it DIY and it worked fine

sayyatiddaknini · 18/07/2018 12:41

Barbara Walsh retired afaik. There is another one of her ilk that I heard of but as pp said I don't think it's so important now with the Tiffin entrance exam changes.

I'm a tutor (not 11+) and have never had to advertise due to parents/other tutors helpfully passing on my details, so I am surprised you have not found one through word of mouth.

Thisonesfortheroad · 22/04/2020 19:06

What schools are you looking at applying for?ive found that some tutors are better tailored to certain entrance exams than others although all good ones will get you through.

Purplepaper · 23/04/2020 18:25

Hi 15After8itsgrownuptime

Maybe Tiffin boys, Sutton grammar, Walllington, Langley grammar. Not sure of exact ones but Sutton, Slough and Kingston area.

Hi there, I hope I am in time, I wonder if you are looking for an arts tutor. I have 2 11+ scholarship students wanting to submit a porfolio for scholarship entrance examinations. It is quite a challenge, but if your child loves art, or the thought of being an artist, building a portfolio could be an excellent way to start. I have loved my first year of tutoring one to one, having never taught before, I am not thick with teaching qualifications, that are so tedious and mind numbing. (shout out to the teachers!). Do get in touch. Victoria at [email protected] - Wandsworth, Wimbledon

SCALLIWAG · 18/02/2021 16:08

I've heard procedo education are recommended locally in Teddington for 11+ tutoring. A friend had a tutor from procedo who she thought was 'amazing' and she got in to Tiffin.

I live in SW london and was struggling with finding tutor for my daughter when she studied for 11+ too. Even my best friend by the time was extremely secretive and not sharing info and both myself and my husband work full time and long hours so wasnt easy to involve in any school gate discussion. Our nanny/carer couldnt drive so the only option was weekend which narrowed our choice if any. In the end we googled and found our tutor which has email address as 11plustutor as time was running out. I have heard of Oxbridge tutor centre too which isnt too far from your location. Under the current circumstances, there might be so much more availability as lessons could be online which is great, saving travelling time. Parents involvement plays more important role though. Many of people I know teach or mark their children homework. We didnt have time by then so just always encourage her and remind her of the homework. Good luck!
