Reaching the ELGs?

Out of interest. How many kids reach some or all of their early learning goals before they start reception?

All- very few
Some- quite a few

Nobody actually knows as it isn't collated nationally. It is school internal data. Some LAs used to ask for on entry but certainly no viable data set.

Interesting. Do you know which ones are more commonly achieved?

My son would have had the maths ones, speaking, technology and imagination ones in school nursery or before school nursery.

My son had all. Didn't realise it was a big deal. He's bright enough but nothing special.

Given that more than 70% of all kids reach at least expected in all 17 goals by the end of YR, you would expect a fair amount to have reached some at least at the beginning.

How would you know? Do the pre-school tell you? My son went to an awful preschool, 5x outstanding Ofsted apparently making it one of the few in the country to be 'so good' but it was a nightmare, when he started school it wasn't so much what he could do (quite a lot) to what he would do for the teacher when she asked him. So hardly think he met any (didn't recite twinkle twinkle, didn't colour in the lines, write his name, retell a story) he did well in maths. Anyway, he knows how to play the game now so did well in reception by the end.

The nursery has to fill out a form marking off where the child is at for the school

Very unusual for children to actually be a whole year ahead of curriculum expectations before they start school.

Less unusual for nurseries to be pretty generous in their assessments though! Especially if they have lower qualified staff.

My August born met all 17 ELG (and exceeded 10 of them) when he was four and 10 months (so at the end of reception). I think some 60% of summer born kids meet all 17 ELG by the end of reception (by memory - could be wrong).

Seeing as quite a few children are four and ten months (or older) before starting reception, I don't see why it should be so rare? People say reception is not so very different to nursery school, a child that is ready to learn at age 4 (and 60% of the summer borns seem to be) should be able to learn the same kind of stuff, to the same kind of level, no matter if they were born on 1st September and spend that year at nursery school or they were born on 31st August and spend that year in reception. Also going to school full time slowed my DS's learning down (as we had no more time for one-to-one playful learning at home). So I would expect around the same amount of Autumn born children to meet all 17 ELG by the time they are four and ten months (i.e. before they start reception) as Summer born children do by the time they are four and ten months (i.e. at the end of reception); that is, around half of the September and October borns?

You lost me there on whether they did or didn't
