Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone could recommmends one good books that my end yr 1 DS could read for himself.

I haven’t really had much feedback from the school other than his reading is fine and he is meeting expected levels, so I’m assuming he is an average reader. He enjoys facts but also stories - anything a bit funny is good. I guess I’m looking for some recommendations for some shortish chapter books that he might enjoy reading himself or we can read a page each?

Sorry this is so vague - for some reason having been very confident in choosing early books for my kids I feel a bit lost by this! Due to various personal circumstances his reading at home has really slipped the last term ( although I still read to him) and I’d like to get back on track.

My son is end of year one, his absolute favourite books are the Dogman series by Dav Pikey, he think they are hilarious. Kind of half comic, half book.

I've just asked him what he would recommend, he says Dogman and Usbourne information books! And Horrible Histories books. And Michael Rosen poem books.

Muddlingalongalone · 13/07/2018 20:34

Can you take him to the library and let him choose or ask the teacher specifically for recommendations.
I found despite being an advanced reader for her age dd1 still chose picture books albeit longer ones quite often. In comparison with rainbow fairies/early readers the language was quite often more challenging so I took her lead.
She read worst witch as her first chapter books but that doesn't really cover your scope.

My DS is end Y1 but is on blue band which the school say is meeting expectations. I'm not sure he could read independently yet.

Another vote for dog man, also Mr majeika

ThreeLeggedCat · 13/07/2018 21:22

Horrid Henry or 13-Storey-Treehouse series.

tryingtocatchthewind · 13/07/2018 22:15

The horrid Henry easy readers are good. My year 1 kid loves any sort of Minecraft or Pokemon book.

Dogman is also a hit, I might try some of my old Garfield books

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 13/07/2018 22:17

Was gonna say dogman too. Also captain underpants and storey treehouse books.

Picture books are also good as they have good vocabulary as they are made for adults to read to kids.

drspouse I teach Year 1 and at my school we would expect children at end of year Age Related Expectations to be reading green or orange books fairly fluently and to have good comprehension skills when discussing what they've read.

I'd say that a child on blue books at the end of Year 1 isn't behind enough for it to be a worry, but is still a little below where you would want them to be.

Thank you everyone - will definitely take a look at those recommendations!

DS is reading the Magic Treehouse chapter books to me. They are American so the grammar is slightly dodgy which annoys me, but he’s enjoying the story.
Independently he likes Beast Quest, a set of superheroes early readers from the book people, endless Star Wars books, Usbourne lift the flap Look inside books and other fact books.

ifIonlyknew · 14/07/2018 07:39

Claude! We loved the Claude books. By Alex someone I think

Sunshine818 · 14/07/2018 07:47

Captain Underpants were favourites for our son from end year one/start of year 2

WeightedCompanionCube · 14/07/2018 08:23

You will hate me for this suggestion but - joke books. They're naturally in short bursts of text so less intimidating but not carrying any negative associations from being "easy".

Will drive you insane though - I threatened (nicely- I get on well with the staff) to send my y1 child in with her full collection to share if they sent home another model making homework!

northernlites · 14/07/2018 08:25

Enid blyton easy readers - on Amazon Have been great for my two

drspouse · 14/07/2018 09:25

We also love Claude but I think the words would be a bit unusual for a Y1 to read. DS knows a lot more words than he can read but doesn't know a lot of the words in Claude.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/07/2018 15:01

Dr Seuss and not fiction too.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/07/2018 15:01

Non

AdventuresRUs · 14/07/2018 18:10

Magic treehouse is a hit here.

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 14/07/2018 20:56

The see inside books are good for factual. Dirty Bertie, for puerile humour. My DS reads these and according to his report he reads at an 8 year old level.
