Handwriting Y1/2

DS is about to go into Y2 and his handwriting has been consistently flagged as a problem area. I wanted to work on this over the summer and was wondering if anyone could recommend any resources. Issues highlighted in his school report are speed, size/legibility, motivation/effort/distractibility. When I’ve done any type of free writing stuff with him at home he gets very hung up on spelling, although he is pretty good at spelling as far as I’m aware. His reading in contrast is excellent.

Whole point of free writing is not bothering about spelling/grammar/structure or anything, but concentrate on putting words on the paper. You need to make sure he understand that.
Size/speed/legibility will improve if you practice regularly.
For motivation/effort/distractibility, can you give him the topics that he is interested?

get him assessed for dcd/dyspraxia

The problem is he over focusses on the spelling when I’m there and asks how pretty much every word he wants to use should be spelt. If I leave him to it he just won’t do it.

He definitely doesn’t have DCD/dyspraxia!

This sounds much like my DS. We are using these resources with him, doing 10-15 minutes most days. DP, who works as an Occupational Therapist, tells me they are very well thought of in the trade.

The distractability also would be a huge red flag for me as well as size and legibility. But if you are sure.

Thank you Urbane, that’s just the type of thing I was looking for.

Pretty much all other aspects of his visual/perceptual and motor skills are really good it’s mainly just writing that’s an issue at present.

ADHD is maybe more of a likelihood but he’s only 5 still and I’m hoping he’ll grow out of a lot of it.
