Any Yr 2 teachers around?

DD has had her end of KS1 report and was given exceeding in reading, writing and maths.

We're delighted that she has done so well - but I was just wondering how common it is for a yr2 child to get exceedings in all areas?

Well done to your DD!

I’m not a teacher, but there are summary reports available for all schools (probably only up to 2017 at the moment). You may have to dig around on the school website or the internet to find them.

I have just dug out a copy I saved for our local authority, and according to the spreadsheet I’ve got, the % achieving Greater Depth nationally at end of KS1 in 2017 were:

• Reading 25%
• Writing 16%
• Maths 21%

Thank you Smile

I've seen those stats but what I can't find officially recorded anywhere is what percentage of children get exceedings in all areas, so thought anecdotally that teachers might be able to help.

It's pure curiosity!

There are only 15 in dgs’ year group and of them 5 were exceeding in all areas.

I know because I used to help with reading and I asked the teacher who gave me numbers though not names. He is in Year 4 now so that was a while ago.

Not Y2 (Y5), but that's really excellent. It is unusual to get Above/Exceeding in all areas. There isn't a specific statistic/percentage a teacher can give you, as it varies every year and is very cohort dependant. Well done to your DD!

LetItGoToRuin · 10/07/2018 16:40

I'd have thought that almost all of the pupils that achieve GD in writing would achieve it in reading as well.

Not sure of the correlation with maths, but I'm going to speculate wildly and suggest that 10% achieve GD in all three areas. Anyone else care to place a bet?!

Like the OP, I'd be interested to see a statistic, or teachers' views.

Yes I agree that those who achieve it in writing will most likely achieve it in reading too. Assuming that ability in literacy doesn't always go hand in hand with mathematical ability then if writing was 16% last year, 10% for all 3 sounds like a good call!

To add some anecdata, our school last year got 20% 'greater depth' in all three. 40% in reading, 33% in maths, and 20% in writing. I guess that means that every child that got greater depth in writing got the same in reading AND in maths.

High achieving school with very involved supportive parents, some tutoring already in Y2, and a high achieving cohort within this school.

DS was not one of the six kids (out of 30) that got all three as the teacher did not have enough evidence for the writing (she said) by the deadline when she had to submit the grades; by the end of the year i.e. 6 weeks later or so she confidently gave him 'greater depth' though so he seems to have narrowly missed getting all three.

I'm guessing that writing is the hardest for teachers to gather evidence in. DD's class had a big push on writing a few weeks ago and the things she had to aim for were very specific - using more conjunctions, suffixes etc. It must be frustrating for the teachers when they know full well a child is able but they can't tick enough boxes enough times.
