Does anyone know of any new progressive/alternative schools in Uk?

I am particularly keen to hear of any that may be starting up or have newly opened in North London, if anyone knows of one? Or otherwise also be interested to hear of any others around the UK that may be in fruition or soon to open while we have been overseas this past year.

Thanks!

Hi OP

What sort of alternative school are you looking for? Is there a reason you want to know about newly opened schools / schools that are starting up?

Danish school in N7.

CruCru · 09/07/2018 00:55

I know of quite a few alternative / progressive schools but I wouldn't necessarily describe them as newly opened.

Hi. To be honest a number seem to be struggling. Small steps in South London, Small school at Hartland and Lewes New school.
There is sunrise in Tottenham sunrise.org.uk but that’s been around a long time. London Acorn is relatively new. St Michaels Steiner in Feltham is in a new location

hibbledibble · 09/07/2018 19:59

I was going to mention Sunrise too. It had been opened a while, and is very alternative. Not most people's cup of tea, but it may work for you.

Ah yes we went to see it wasn't for us, we barely got through the door with a very complicated time organising an appt then nobody expecting us when we arrived.

I like the Acorn school. Traditional more purist Steiner not for us though. I was excited about The New School but has just closed.

I will check Small steps in South London, Small school at Hartland haven't heard of those.

Other schools it might be worth looking at are:

Dallington
The Gower
The Lyceum
The Academy (Hampstead)
Trevor Roberts

I don’t think any of these are newly opened though. How alternative they are will vary.

Mary19 · 10/07/2018 16:08

The other school that closed was small acres not small steps www.facebook.com/SmallAcresSchool/ this may be of interest

There is Educare Small school in Kingston which is a long established school.
Another one that may interest you is Chalfont Grammar (secondary)which follows an international curriculum and is quite new and small.www.thechalfontsgrammar.co.uk/admissions/#dates

Wow thank you for the list. There are more alternative schools that I had thought. One that is socially emotionally focused with emphasis on creativity feels most important to us. I am reading through with interest.

Good luck with your search - I’m after the same sort of thing in Warwickshire but haven’t found anything yet. I’d consider trying to set something up but it looks to be a very complicated process (and not always successful, judging by the comments up there 👆 ).

wondertime · 11/07/2018 00:13

I have often wondered about setting one up to. We have been living in California where creative, social/emotionally focused schools are in abundance. It feels sad that this isn't an easily available option in the UK for parents that seek it. I have done lots of research of UK schools in the past and I never found anything close to what is here. To see it in action is incredible, the non pressured, community spirited and creative enviroments that allows the children to be children as they grown and learn has been wonderful. V tempting to recreate in UK!

In that case I’d go and have a look at Dallington.

daffodildelight · 11/07/2018 16:35

Are you tied to London or would you consider elsewhere?

Thank you for that link. We are mostly considering London or Hove

I ask for newly opened ones as I felt I knew about most that were available before we left for US. There are many that I was totally unaware of and have opened since my last search. So encouraging to see everybody's suggestions!

@wondertime Did you end up finding a school you’re happy with? I am having the same problem! (Probably) moving back to the uk, probably London, and looking to find a progressive school…
