Composite classes infants

I'm not strictly against composites but I am quite worried my 5 year old will be in one next year. He is going to be in a 2/3 as a p2.

How does this work? My son is not at all independent so I can't imagine he will just sit and get on with his work while the teacher is teaching the p3s. How does 1 teacher normally manage with these young age groups probably working at totally different paces and learning different things? He is also youngest in his year and probably a bit behind so I am very confused about him being put in this composite.

The school will have their reasons and will have classified very carefully. They don't want to give themselves a class that won't work after all!

In any P2 class there will be a range of abilities and the children would be required to complete more independent tasks anyway.

The good thing about a composite is that it is capped at 25 and a straight P2 can go to 30. It may be that there are very independent 3s going into the class, who can work for longer periods alone, or some 3s who need extra support for the basics.

I wouldn't worry. He is still a P2, he will still get support when he needs it, and as I mentioned, he will be in a smaller class.

HTH!

Thanks. I like the idea of a smaller class. I'm sure the school knows what they are doing, it just really took me by surprise! The teachers seems lovely too so that is a positive.
