Sports day in 32 degrees?

Hello...School going ahead with sports day in a field, no shelter, when going to be like today (31.5 here). Advice always to stay out of sun 11am to 3pm. Sports day is 1pm - smack in middle.
Think ok to let them get on with it - am I being British and weather moaning lol - or call and query, or pull out? Surely shouldn't be sitting in it for over an hour let alone running around in it? Be ideal if they just change it for a morning when will be 22 degrees not 32...thank you for thoughts x

Most of Europe, and the US would find that temperature acceptable.

Ours has been moved to ten am for thst reason

When my kids were at primary school I would have been delighted if they had just cancelled bloody sports day completely. Nothing to do with the weather, it was just a total pain in the arse and went on for far too long.

Our school has just changed the time of ours to the morning too. If they have a hat, sun cream and a drink they will be fine.

Thank you...agree changing to a morning much better. Still not, but bearable hot that we are more used to.

As long as they are in the shade between races, with plenty of drinks available, it will be fine. Usual precautions of hat, sunscreen etc.

reluctantbrit · 25/06/2018 18:45

Last on a very hot day. All the children wore hats and several poured their water bottles over their heads on a regular basis and then drinking water as well.

Some did feel a bit weak after it finished but they were released home straight after.

Water, suncream and hat and they will be fine.

Hat (not a cap if possible), suncream, water (freeze half the bottle then top up). Morning start would be preferable.

Holding sports days on days this hot drives me crazy. My DD ended up with heatstroke in hospital for 2 days on a drip because her school decided to crack on with sports day even after the government had issued a heatwave warning. I wouldn’t run around and sit in this heat for hours on end so why on Earth are little kids expected to.

cariadlet · 25/06/2018 19:11

I think that 32 degrees would be uncomfortably hot just for sitting around. Sounds way too hot for a sports day. Where are you to have that kind of temperature?

I think it's fine as long as they take precautions.Hats and plenty of water, sunscreen and rest.

It's not like they are running around whole afternoon.
I grew up in the country 32 degrees is kind of mild for summer. Non of my friends suffered from heat playing outside in the summer when we were kids.

wentmadinthecountry · 25/06/2018 22:49

We put up a big row of gazebos plus tree shade. Children spend most of the afternoon in the shade. They have water we provide and top up, we provide school hats if necessary for those whose parents don't provide and we tell them all to wear sunblock. I have spoken to parents in my class and have permission for them to use the spray sunblock I always keep on hand. Some bring in their own sunblock. Even pale me can cope with this much sun!!

Our school has postponed sports day from this Thursday. I’m very pleased, it’s just no fun for the kids in this heat, or for the parents watching with no shade. I would probably have raised the question if they hadn’t already postponed it.

I'm with you PaigetheRepahite. It's too hot!

MissEliza · 26/06/2018 16:07

We had ours today and it was fine. I'm more concerned about my dd sitting in a tiny stuffy class with one little desk fan for cool air. Schools should really be checking the temperatures of the classes and considering if it's safe or fair.
