Teachers - if a child is off sick for 2 days, do you give them 3 days' worth of homework the day they come back?

Is this normal?

ds1 was ill on Monday and Tuesday with a tummy bug. Yesterday, he was better and went back to school, only to come home with 3 days homework.
He ended up in tears, unable to finish it all, begging to be allowed to go to school next time he is ill, so that he doesnt get behind with homework again.

What year is he? I can understand the teacher needing him to catch up to an extent but do you know the teacher expected it all to be done in one night? I would have done Monday night's plus some on Tuesday's, then on Tues finish off Tuesdays and get as much of Wednesday's done - etc. till it was all done and he had caught up.

I would do a letter to the teacher saying that expecting 3 nights homework done in one night is unreasonable.

Unless it was coursework for GCSE's I personally wouldn't give them any work

Nightynight · 24/05/2007 07:53

I told him not to finish it, when we got to 7pm, but he was very upset, because the teacher hadnt given him any timetable, just expected him to do it. He wouldnt believe me that it was unreasonable to do it all in one day.
I havent sent a letter becuase it would take me too long to write, at least an hour with a dictionary, and I might make things worse if I got it wrong and gave a different impression from what I intended.

Like BB I would have done it piecemeal over the week

robinpud · 24/05/2007 08:05

You're going to tell us he is 6 at the most aren't you Nighytnight....

No, I wouldn't expect child of priamry age to do the homework,, but am unfailingly amused by the parents who call in especially to collect homewrk for their absent child..o

SSSandy2 · 24/05/2007 08:08

I take it NN that you are not yet in France

DANCESwithnewlytannedlegs · 24/05/2007 08:13

I wouldn't expect them to do homework either unless it was part of an ongoing project but even so I would give a clear deadline, giving them plenty of time, not the next day!

Are you still away Robinpud? You've got 2yrs ticking away until you have to be back to job share with me....do you remember that conversation

Nightynight · 24/05/2007 14:53

hi sandy, no, my teeth are ground smooth though.....

robin - ds's teacher is worse! she told me that she expects parents to do half an hour a day of reading and writing practise, on top of school and homework, because she feels that the children benefit from this. I wonder if I was the only parent in the class who flatly refused to do this?

my dd is 5 and had 1 day off and got the hw from the previous day, to do along side that days hw. I was speaking to a neighbour whose dd is 6 and she got a weeks worth of hw after being off ill for a week

fireflyfairy2 · 24/05/2007 15:15

When my dd was off sick I sent in a letter requesting that the teacher send home the work she was missing.

Instead, I got a letter saying not to worry & that dd would 'catch up' without any difficulty.

I would complain also if dd had to do it all in one night, though my dd is just in Y1 so would not have had that much at all.

What age is your ds??

finknottle · 24/05/2007 15:47

3 guesses where you live

Never ceases to amaze me that when they're off sick they (Y4 & Y2 boys) get homework brought round by a classmate or given to their brother together with the class work they missed. Last week ds1 (Y4) was brought his homework by a teacher because she'd missed ds2 at school.

I've taken to writing notes that the boys will catch up over the next week or so. Also taken to writing "He's done an hour today & I think that's enough" in ds2's homework book and get an "OK" back from his (thankfully human) new teacher. If he were struggling I don't think she'd be as amenable. DS1 (Y4) is expected to have done all class & homework by the next "Heftfuerhrung" check or he gets a lower mark

Nightynight · 24/05/2007 17:03

hmm. I might lift that line about having done enough "he's done 2 hours and I think thats enough"

his teacher is a nutcase imo - she sent 2 letters round today, one telling me to tell ds not to clown in the classroom (does she think I encourage him or what?)
and the other one setting out what the children are supposed to have achieved, all targetted at mono-lingual, german children with sahm's naturally.
Think Ill ask her to come and help me with my job next week - I could do with a bit of help.
